This year's One Maryland One Book selection is a personal and analytical look at culture critic Lawrence Burney's home city of Baltimore, music from throughout the global Black diaspora, and the traditions that raised him.

In a time when music is spurring Black Americans’ connection with Africans on the Continent, culture critic Lawrence Burney takes us on a journey from the streets of Baltimore to the concert halls of Lagos, reminisces on seeing his mother perform as the opening act of a Gil Scott-Heron show when he was a child, and sits at a Maryland crab feast with family, assessing how the Black people in his home state have historically improvised paths for their liberation. Burney explores these profound interactions with incisive and energizing prose, offering us a personal and critical perspective on the people, places, music, and art that transformed him.

No Sense in Wishing is a kaleidoscopic exploration of Burney’s search for self. With its gutsy and uncompromising criticism alongside intimate personal storytelling, this “powerful collection of essays” (Rolling Stone) is like an album that hits all the right notes, from a promising writer on the rise.

One Maryland One Book is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Institute of Museum and Library Services, Maryland State Library Agency, Deutsch Foundation, Baker Foundation, BGE An Exelon Company, and Baltimore County Commission on Arts and Sciences.

This event is open for full participation by all individuals regardless of race, color, religion, s*x, national origin, or any other protected category under applicable federal law, state law, and the University's nondiscrimination policy.

🏛️New library exhibit alert!

September 19, 2026 marks 60 years since UMBC's first classes were held, but the history of UMBC's founding includes many other important firsts. Visit the Library Rotunda to explore key historical documents from the University Archives and learn more about the development, planning, and the important mark left on our campus by the school's first students.

Founding and Firsts: UMBC at 60 will be on display through November 1. The exhibit was curated by Emma Sigrist, Interlibrary Loan Lending Specialist, and is part of the Library's Fall semester programming for the Maryland Semiquincentennial.

Join Emma and archivist Lindsey Loeper on Wednesday October 28 during free hour (Noon - 1 p.m.) for a hands-on experience with the University Archives and to pick up a button made just for the event!

Policymakers' Unmet Desire for Science
- a Social Sciences Forum Lecture with Dr. Adam S. Levine

Wednesday, October 7, 2026 · 4 - 5:30 PM

Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery: UMBC

Featuring Adam Seth Levine, PhD
SNF Agora Institute Professor of Health Policy and Management Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University
President of research4impact

We often think of policymakers in the US as either pro-science or anti-science. In his talk, Dr. Adam Seth Levine will argue for a third possibility as well: many of them have an unmet desire for science. He will discuss why it’s important to measure this unmet desire and then, using a series of nationally-representative studies and randomized-controlled trials, how to surface and meet it (as well as assess the impact of doing so). The data come from federal, state, and local policymakers, and a wide variety of research areas relevant to policy challenges they face (e.g., the environment, mental health, bioethics, neuroscience, child and family policy, etc.). The goal is to provide insights that are both interesting and actionable, including evidence-based strategies that attendees can implement (if they wish) to deepen their own connections between research and policy.
