⚡ Why Do Utility Poles Have So Many Different Wires?
You see utility poles around Bamberg every day—but have you ever wondered what all those different wires are for?

Not every wire on a utility pole carries electricity. A single pole may support several types of services, typically arranged at different heights for safety and accessibility.

⚡ Electric lines — Usually located higher on the pole, these lines are part of the electric distribution system that delivers power throughout the community.

🔌 Transformers & service equipment — Transformers help reduce voltage to the appropriate level before electricity is delivered to homes and businesses.

📱 Communications lines — Lower sections of a pole may carry telephone, cable, internet, or fiber-optic lines owned by communications providers.

↕️ Why the separation? — Required spacing helps keep different utility systems safely separated and gives qualified crews room to perform their work.

So the next time you look up at a utility pole, remember: there's a lot more happening overhead than just electricity!

⚠️ Safety reminder: Never touch a downed wire or anything in contact with it. Always assume a downed line is energized, keep your distance, and report it.

On Friday, September 18, Bamberg County paused to honor our past, celebrate those who serve us today, and take another important step toward preparing our community for the future.

Bamberg County Council and Administration welcomed community members, first responders, state and local leaders, and special guests for “Honoring Those Who Answer the Call,” a historic three-part ceremony at the former Bamberg County Memorial Hospital site.

The afternoon marked three significant moments:

⭐ The groundbreaking for the new Bamberg County Emergency Operations Center, strengthening our County’s ability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies.

⭐ The dedication of the First Responders Memorial, honoring the men and women of law enforcement, fire service, EMS, emergency management and public works who answer the call when our communities need them most.

⭐ The unveiling of the historic marker honoring the Old Bamberg County Memorial Hospital, preserving the story of a place that served generations of Bamberg County families.

The occasion held even greater meaning as our community commemorates the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, and America’s 250th birthday — reminding us of the enduring values of service, sacrifice, courage and community.

We were especially honored by the distinguished guests who joined us and shared remarks representing the many professions that make public safety possible.

Our program included Kim Stenson, Director of the South Carolina Emergency Management Division; Kelly Moore, Chief of Staff for the South Carolina Department of Transportation; John Edward Jones, Jr., Executive Director of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association; Jason Dennis, President of the South Carolina Firefighters Association; Will Rochester, representing the South Carolina EMS Association; and Chris Battlo, Regional Operations Manager with Thorne Ambulance Service.

They were joined by Bamberg County Emergency Services Director Tiffany Kemmerlin, Bamberg County Fire Department Coordinator Paul Eubanks, Bamberg County Council Chairwoman Michelle Martin, members of Bamberg County Council, City of Bamberg Mayor Corey Ramsey, Bamberg County Historic Society President Nancy Foster, Palmetto Regional Chamber President Bob Snead, and other community and public-service leaders.

County Administrator Joey Preston served as Master of Ceremonies and provided an overview of the project, while Councilman Evert Comer, Jr. offered the opening prayer and Bamberg County Coroner and Colston Branch Baptist Church Pastor Shawn Hanks closed the historic occasion in prayer.

👏 SPECIAL THANKS

An event of this magnitude is never the work of one person or one organization. Bamberg County extends its sincere appreciation to everyone whose planning, coordination and hard work helped make Friday possible, including:

Thomas Thomas, Deputy Administrator; Chip Maler, Assistant to the Administrator; John Perry, Assistant to the Administrator; Rose Shepherd, Clerk to Council; Tiffany Kemmerlin, Director of Bamberg County Emergency Services; Alisha Moore, Public Information Officer; Bill Johnson and staff, County Operations; Aaron Ness, Bamberg County Attorney; Kenneth Bamberg, Bamberg County Sheriff; Paul Eubanks, Bamberg County Fire Department Coordinator; Thorne Ambulance Service; the Bamberg County Historic Society; Bill Dennis, Lake Moultrie Construction; and Paula Reel, Heritage Interpreter.

We also extend our gratitude to our partners at the South Carolina Emergency Management Division: Director Kim Stenson, Chief of Staff Steven Batson, Chief of Recovery and Mitigation Emily Bently, and State Hazard Mitigation Officer Tyler Spires.

Friday was more than a groundbreaking. More than a dedication. More than an unveiling.

It was a reminder of what can happen when local government, state partners, first responders, community organizations and citizens come together with a shared purpose.

To every firefighter, law enforcement officer, EMS professional, emergency management professional, public works employee, volunteer and family member who supports those who serve:

Thank you for answering the call.

HONORING OUR PAST. SERVING OUR PRESENT.
PREPARING FOR OUR FUTURE.
