On Wednesday, October 21, our staff turned up the PINK in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month! 🎀 It didn’t matter if it was a little or a lot of pink, the staff came together to show support for those fighting, celebrate the survivors, and honoring those we've lost.

Statement to Bandon School District Staff and
Families

Dear Bandon School District Staff and Families,

Our hearts are heavy as we learn about the recent school shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon. We extend our deepest sympathy to the students, families, staff members, and entire school community impacted by this tragic event. No child, educator, or family should ever have to experience the fear and trauma associated with violence in a place dedicated to learning, growth, and belonging. We recognize that incidents like this affect us all, and we hold
everyone impacted in our thoughts.

The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priorities. We are
committed to ensuring that every student feels safe, supported, and ready to learn, and that
every staff member feels confident in our shared responsibility to protect and care for our school community. While we know that events like these can create fear and uncertainty, we want our families and staff to know that we take our responsibility for school safety seriously and remain committed to keeping our school space safe for our students, staff and community.

We also recognize that this news may bring up difficult emotions and concerns for students,
staff, and families. We encourage everyone to approach one another with compassion,
patience, and understanding. Please reach out to your school’s administration if you have
questions, concerns, or need support as we navigate this difficult time together.

The strength of the Bandon School District lies in our relationships, our care for one another,
and our shared commitment to our children. We will continue to listen, learn, and take thoughtful
action to support the safety and well-being of our entire school community.

Thank you for the trust you place in us and for the care you show our students, colleagues, and neighbors. We stand in solidarity with the school community in Bend and remain united in our commitment to making our schools places where every student and staff member feels safe, valued, and supported.

With care and commitment,

Bandon School District Leadership

Superintendent’s Message

Dear Tiger Family, October 2026

As we are wrapping up week 7 of the 2026-2027 school year it is a reminder of how fast these school years go by. For parents the time with our children is fleeting as we look back and wonder where it went. As a teacher and administrator I have the same feelings and sense of awe as I watch our community's youth grow.

At the October school board meeting we had a presentation about the summer learning program at Ocean Crest. The presentation included students who were telling the school board what they had done in the program and how their reading and math skills had improved as a result. The students and teacher did a fantastic job of presenting to the school board. It was a reminder that improving academic outcomes is the most important aspect of schooling. There certainly are many other areas where our students grow including socially, mentally and physically.

In the coming months I will be conducting several community listening sessions as we look to create strategic plans, build a sustainable budget, and conduct a needs assessment. These will be interactive sessions and I hope that many of you will attend and provide input. The schools do belong to the community and it is important that we reflect the needs and the values of our community. Please be on the lookout for these events and make sure your voice is heard and included as the district moves forward.

The Oregon Department of Education recently released the state assessment results from the 2025-2026 school year. In several areas Bandon students are outperforming the state average which is good but we need to do better. Too many of our students are not meeting or exceeding the standards on these assessments. I know these assessments are controversial and imperfect point-in-time assessments and several students opt out of the assessments. These results are just one of the data points that we use to build our strategic plan and it is important that all of our students participate so that we have a clear picture of the strengths and weaknesses in our district.

Each week I send a Friday update email to staff and I end it the same way by wishing them a happy weekend and encouraging them to spend it with those who mean the most to them. As the holiday season quickly approaches, I encourage all of us to spend time with the people who mean the most to us.

Steve
