đź‘€ Found in lane #4. Can you spot the problem? One of our inspectors did.

Take a close look at the load. One of the 100-pound bags of barite has worked its way out of the wrapped portion of the load and is nearly falling from the trailer.

The inspector also discovered several bags were missing from the load.

Here's where it gets interesting: Can shrink wrap or stretch film be used to unitize cargo?

Yes - but there's a catch. When shrink wrap or film is used to unitize cargo, the individual articles have to remain secured within the surface of the material. Additionally, per 49 CFR section 393.100(b), cargo must be secured to prevent it from falling from a commercial motor vehicle.

Simply wrapping a load doesn't necessarily make everything inside that wrapping one secure unit.
This vehicle was placed out of service until the load was properly secured.

Our officers and inspectors are looking beyond the obvious every day to help keep unsafe cargo off the road.

It is with profound sadness that the California Highway Patrol announces the line-of-duty death of Officer Brian Liles of the Visalia Area.

On September 28, 2026, at approximately 5:11 p.m., CHP Motorcycle Officer Liles was involved in an on-duty traffic crash on State Route 99, just north of State Route 190 in Tipton. He sustained critical injuries and, despite lifesaving efforts, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Officer Liles, 44, served the people of California for more than 16 years. After graduating from the CHP Academy in 2010, he was assigned to the San Jose Area and later served in the Hayward and Fresno Areas before transferring to the Visalia Area in 2019.

Officer Liles is survived by his wife, two children, his parents, and two sisters.

The CHP extends its deepest condolences to Officer Liles' family, friends, loved ones, and all who served alongside him. His dedication to public service and commitment to protecting the people of California will not be forgotten.

September is California Rail Safety Month.

Whether you're driving, walking, or riding near railroad tracks, remember: trains always have the right of way.

• Obey railroad crossing signals and gates.
• Never stop on the tracks.
• Stay off railroad tracks and never use them as a shortcut.
• Look and listen for trains, even when a crossing appears clear.

A train can't stop quickly, but you can make the safe choice. 🚦🚶

⚠️ OUT-OF-SERVICE! ⚠️

A massive loader is only as safe as the smallest link holding it down. Swipe to see why a DOT inspector would place an immediate Out-of-Service (OOS) order on this vehicle.

That bent, inoperable safety latch on the trailer's safety chain hook means the connection is legally compromised under FMCSR/CVSA criteria. Don't let a simple spring ground your entire operation and rack up thousands in fines.

👉 Pre-Trip Checklist Reminder: Check your hooks, cross your chains, and never roll with compromised hardware.

Hidden in Plain Sight

During a recent inspection at the Desert Hills Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility, CHP officers stopped this loaded tractor-trailer and discovered one of the two fifth wheel pivot bracket pins was missing.

The pivot pins retain the fifth wheel head on the tractor, ultimately connecting the trailer to the tractor. With one pin missing, the fifth wheel assembly is no longer properly secured, creating the potential for a catastrophic failure resulting in trailer separation.

Because of the severity of the defect, the vehicle was immediately placed Out of Service and remained out of service until repairs were completed per 49 Code of Federal Regulations, section 393.70(b)(1)(i) - CVSA Out of Service Criteria.

This is a reminder why thorough pre-trip inspections matter. Many of the most dangerous defects aren't obvious until someone takes the time to look closely.

For comparison, a video of the opposite side was included to show what it should look like...
Would you have noticed the missing pin before the camera zoomed in? đź‘€

Congratulations to the new parents and outstanding work by Officer Simmons and the San Gorgonio Pass Area - serving the public in ways people don't always see:

On April 28, 2026, at approximately 4:18 PM the CHP San Gorgonio Pass received a call for service regarding a driver who was going into labor and was requesting medical assistance on the Interstate 10 westbound Cherry Valley Boulevard offramp. Upon arriving on scene Officer Simmons was directed to the driver in distress by family members and without delay our officer put on his proper protective equipment and began assisting the driver. At approximately 4:31 PM Officer Simmons helped deliver the baby boy named Sonny on the side of the offramp prior to the Calimesa Fire Department arriving on scene. Mom and Sonny were then transported to the San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital where they are doing well.
