This past Wednesday BHFD hosted an island wide active threat tabletop exercise. The exercise tested response framework, incident command system, and mutual aid cooperation.

The tabletop had representatives from Bar Harbor Mount Desert Police Department, Mount Desert Fire Department, MDI Health, Southwest Harbor Police Department, Southwest Harbor-Tremont Ambulance, and Hancock County, Maine, Emergency Management Agency.

This tabletop was made possible in part by our friends in the fabrication services department of The Jackson Laboratory who provided a 3D printed model of MDI High School.

This demonstrated interagency cooperation and support shows the commitment of all public safety agencies on MDI to provide rapid, efficient, and coordinated emergency responses to the citizens and visitors of MDI.

Every household should maintain an emergency supply kit capable of sustaining everyone in the home for at least three days, though seven days is recommended. It doesn't take long to put one together, and it can make a difference when it matters most.

Preparedness checklists are available through ready.gov/kit

Ambulances from Bar Harbor and Mount Desert rendezvous with a LifeFlight helicopter at Park St Landing Zone during yet another busy day of emergencies on the island. Interagency cooperation is vital to carry out our mission and ensure everyone gets the help they need.

Yesterday, Firefighter Wilhelm led the weekly Tanker 1 check aided by his daughter, who is riding along on the ambulance in preparation for nursing school. Serving the public clearly runs in the family.

Wilhelm is one of Bar Harbor's call firefighters; part-time responders who respond to emergencies from home. Bar Harbor’s call force enhances the capacity of the department, especially when more hands are needed during serious incidents.
