Public: “Hey, there are people parking on the sidewalk! Can your officers please enforce these violations?”

Chief to officers: “Ok men, get out there and write sidewalk tickets, but make them a friendly warning. It’s not the crime of the century.”

Officers: “We wrote a few warnings using our best judgement, between calls for service. We’ll stay on top of it as much as possible.”

Violator: “Why did you write me a warning citation? And not all the others I told you about? Now I’m going to blast you on social media for not ticketing every vehicle in Barboursville!”

Chief to violator: “It was just a friendly warning.”

Anonymous commenters: “You all never do anything about crime in Barboursville! All you do is write tickets and let the drug dealers and murderers go free!

Chief to officers: “Keep up the good work men!” 🫡 👮🏻‍♂️🚔🙂

From the Desk of the Chief:

I want the citizens of Barboursville to know that we take the presence of illegal drugs in our community very seriously. We will not tolerate those who choose to bring dangerous drugs into our city or put the safety and well-being of our citizens at risk.

The arrest announced today is the result of excellent cooperation between law enforcement agencies, and I am grateful for the hard work and dedication of everyone involved.

Below is a press release from the DEA and the Violent Crimes Drug Task Force.

Since July 2026, the Huntington Violent Crime Drug Task Force (HVCDTF) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have been conducting a joint investigation into a Mexico-based drug trafficking organization operating in the Tri-State area. As a result of the ongoing investigation, members of the HVCDTF and DEA identified a suspected cartel stash house in the Village of Barboursville.

During the investigation, law enforcement officers seized large quantities of fentanyl and co***ne that were being stored at the location for distribution. To date, the HVCDTF and DEA have seized more than 15½ pounds of co***ne and 12½ pounds of fentanyl.

The combined estimated street value of the narcotics seized during the investigation exceeds $1.5 million. Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, no information regarding arrests will be released at this time. Additional information will be made available as the investigation progresses and circumstances permit.

The Huntington Violent Crime Drug Task Force is comprised of detectives from the Huntington Police Department and the Barboursville Police Department. The HVCDTF and DEA would like to recognize and thank the numerous law enforcement agencies and partners who provided assistance throughout this investigation.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia will handle the federal prosecution associated with this investigation. Additional information regarding arrests and prosecution will be released as the case progresses.

Our officers making the rounds this week! One of the most valuable things we do as first responders is interact with kids in a positive way. A strong and safe community begins with investing in the future of our children.

Over the next few days our officers will be issuing warning citations for any vehicles parking on or blocking the sidewalks within the Village. If you receive a warning citation, no action is needed (except the action of no longer parking on the sidewalk).

Violations will be recorded by officers. If a vehicle is parked on the sidewalk again, after receiving a warning, then a parking citation will be issued.

This may sound trivial, but wheelchairs, people with disabilities, pedestrians, dog walkers, and children should have complete access to sidewalks without having to enter the street to pass.

Thank you for your cooperation and consideration,

Chief Lucas

From the Chief's Desk:

I just want to take a moment to point out what a special place the Village of Barboursville is to our area. I don't think there are many places in this country where you can gather 20,000 people, have a massive parade, several live concerts, a street dance, a carnival, food trucks, packed restaurants, for the entire weekend, and not have a single major incident.

Our officers did not respond to one fight. There were no "teen take overs". There were no incidents of disorderly conduct, no criminal destruction of property, no reported larcenies.

As Chief, I'm going to point first to our officers who were out in force, not as militant marauders, but as a personal presence walking on foot, engaging the public, and taking time to help people when needed. They kept people safe, and not a single arrest was made related to the Festival.

But that was just a small percentage of people helping to make this event go off without a hitch. There was an army of city employees who worked from sun-up to sun-down to the early morning hours. There were business owners who went above and beyond to make things run smoothly. There were volunteers who gave their time to fill in the needed spaces.

All of this points to our community, and whether people realize this or not, Barboursville is a special place. It's one of the rare places in our nation that still provides small town community and big town class.

I think that's something worth protecting and defending.

Until next year,

Chief Lucas
