35 years ago this week, Hurricane Bob hit Cape Cod.

On August 19, 1991, Hurricane Bob swept into southern New England, bringing damaging winds, storm surge, flooding, downed trees and widespread power outages.

For many Cape Codders, Bob is still the hurricane they remember.

But here's something worth thinking about: an entire generation has grown up on Cape Cod without experiencing a direct hurricane strike.

35 quiet years can make a storm like Bob feel like history. But hurricanes don't follow a schedule, and a long stretch between storms doesn't tell us when the next one will come.

Bob is also a good reminder that hurricanes aren't only about wind. On Cape Cod, heavy rain, coastal flooding, storm surge, erosion, dangerous surf and power outages can all create problems — even when a storm doesn't make a direct hit.

So while the skies are quiet, take a little time to know your risk and know where to find good information.

Is your family ready for a hurricane?

Cape Cod is entering the time of year when hurricanes and tropical storms are historically most active in Massachusetts. There is no immediate tropical threat to our region, which makes now a good time to prepare — before a storm is in the forecast.

Take a few minutes this week to:

• Check your emergency kit and replace expired supplies
• Make sure you have medications and essentials on hand
• Plan for possible power outages
• Know your hurricane evacuation zone and evacuation route
• Include pets in your emergency plan
• Sign up for your town's emergency alerts
• Talk with your family about where you would go and how you would stay in contact if separated

A hurricane doesn't have to make a direct hit on Cape Cod to bring damaging winds, coastal flooding, heavy rain, dangerous surf and power outages.

The best time to prepare is before you need to.

☀️ Hot Weather Expected Tuesday & Wednesday – Take Heat Precautions

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for much of southern New England from 11 a.m. Tuesday through 8 p.m. Wednesday. Cape Cod and the Islands are not included in the current Heat Advisory.

However, the National Weather Service's HeatRisk Forecast indicates moderate to major heat-related impacts across Cape Cod Tuesday and Wednesday. Hot temperatures and high humidity can increase the risk of heat-related illness, especially for older adults, young children, people with chronic medical conditions, outdoor workers, and those without access to air conditioning.

💧 Stay hydrated.
🏠 Spend time in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible.
☀️ Limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.
👕 Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
❤️ Check on family members, neighbors, and others who may be vulnerable to the heat.
🚗 Never leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.

📍 Cooling Center Open in Bourne

The Bourne Police Department will open a cooling center:

🗓 Tuesday, July 14 & Wednesday, July 15
🕗 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

At this time, Bourne is the only Cape Cod community to announce a cooling center. Barnstable County Emergency Management will share additional cooling center information if more locations become available.

Stay informed, stay hydrated, and stay safe.
