Traffic Alert

DATE ISSUED: Sunday, October 18, 2026

CITY OF BARRE, VT: Hill Street will be fully closed at the railroad crossing between Vermont Route 14 (VT 14) and Perry Street on Monday, October 19, and Tuesday, October 20, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

The closures are necessary to allow crews to place the final wearing course of asphalt. Paving operations are weather dependent, and the schedule may change.

A signed detour will be in place for all travelers during the closures:

Drivers and cyclists traveling through the area will be detoured via South Main Street (VT 14), U.S. Route 302 (U.S. 302), and Hill Street. Traffic approaching from the Perry Street/Hill Street intersection will follow the same route in reverse.
Pedestrians will be detoured via South Main Street (VT 14), Church Street, U.S. 302, and Perry Street.

Detour signage will be posted along all routes to guide travelers.

Hill Street will reopen to traffic within the project area by 5 p.m. each day.

The Barre City Police Department would like to remind everyone that many of the new electric dirt bikes being used by young people are NOT classified as ‘E-Bikes’ under Vermont Law, falling instead under the definitions of Motorcycles, Off Road Only Vehicles, and Motor-Driven Cycles.

10/07/2026

Today, our community experienced two separate bicycle versus motor vehicle crashes in a single day. While the circumstances of each crash are still being addressed, these incidents serve as an important reminder that everyone sharing the road has a responsibility to watch out for one another.

🚴 For bicyclists:
• Wear a properly fitted helmet every time you ride.
• Follow traffic laws and ride in a predictable manner.
• Use lights and reflective clothing, especially during low-light conditions.
• Be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions.
• When possible, make eye contact with drivers before entering an intersection or crossing their path.

🚗 For motorists:
• Slow down and pay attention.
• Look carefully for bicyclists at intersections, crosswalks, driveways, and along the roadway.
• Give bicyclists plenty of room when passing.
• Check your mirrors and blind spots before turning or changing lanes.
• Put the phone down and eliminate distractions while driving.

Bicyclists and motorists are both part of our community, and everyone deserves to get where they're going safely.

Please take a few extra seconds, slow down, and look twice. A moment of attention can prevent a lifetime of consequences.

🇺🇸 25 Years. We Remember.

On September 11, 2001, our nation was forever changed.
Twenty-five years later, we continue to remember the nearly 3,000 innocent people who lost their lives, the firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and other first responders who ran toward danger, and the countless families and communities whose lives were changed forever.

We remember the courage, sacrifice, and selflessness displayed that day. We remember those who never came home. And we remember the heroes who answered the call without knowing the cost.

As law enforcement officers, we carry forward the responsibility of those who came before us—to protect, to serve, and to stand together when our communities need us most.

We will never forget.

🇺🇸 September 11, 2001 — 25 Years Later — Still Remembered.
Honor. Sacrifice. Service. Never Forget.
