Barre City Fire & Ambulance is proud to announce the promotion of Nicholas Copping to Deputy Fire Chief.

Deputy Chief Copping has dedicated the past 19 years to serving the City of Barre and the fire service. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to the department, its members, and the community we serve. His promotion reflects nearly two decades of hard work, professional growth, leadership, and dedication to advancing the fire service.

Deputy Chief Copping was officially sworn in at Barre City Hall in the Council Chambers, with City Manager Patrick Cushing administering the oath of office. Following the oath, his fiancée had the honor of pinning his new Deputy Chief badge.

A promotion such as this represents far more than a new title or badge. It recognizes years of commitment, sacrifice, continued learning, and a willingness to accept greater responsibility in service to others.

We are proud to recognize Deputy Chief Copping for this well-earned achievement and look forward to the leadership, experience, and dedication he will bring to his new role.

Please join us in congratulating Deputy Fire Chief Nicholas Copping on this important milestone in his career! 🚒🔥

With great sadness, the Barre City Fire Department announces the passing of retired Captain Willda “Butchy” Bresett.

Captain Bresett was hired by the Barre City Fire Department in 1987 and faithfully served the citizens of Barre City until his retirement in 2012. His commitment to helping others, however, extended far beyond his career with Barre City. Through his dedicated service with the Williamstown Fire Department and Williamstown Ambulance Service, Butch devoted countless years to protecting and caring for his community.

Butch was the kind of firefighter and mentor who could always be counted on. Whether responding to emergencies, repairing equipment, sharing his knowledge with the next generation of responders, or lending a helping hand wherever it was needed, his impact was felt by everyone around him. He possessed a remarkable wealth of knowledge and experience, but perhaps what many will remember most was his quick wit, legendary one-liners, and ability to bring laughter to even the most challenging situations.

Although Butch retired from the Barre City Fire Department in 2012, the impact of his service continued to be felt throughout our community and the fire and EMS profession. His legacy is one of selfless service, mentorship, dedication, and a deep commitment to helping others. The contributions he made to Barre City, Williamstown, and the countless responders he influenced throughout his career will not be forgotten.

We extend our deepest condolences to Butch’s family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Captain Bresett. Thank you for your service.

🚨🚨Retirement Announcement🚨🚨

At the end of the day on April 30, 2026, Deputy Chief Joseph Aldsworth will retire from the City of Barre after 19 years of unwavering service and dedication.

Deputy Chief Aldsworth’s commitment to public service extends far beyond his time with Barre City. Throughout his career, he has served the region through multiple local EMS agencies, fire agencies, and law enforcement agencies.

Over the years, Deputy Chief Aldsworth could often be found engaging with the community, teaching CPR and First Aid, helping residents connect with services after devastating life events, or cooking burgers and hot dogs at the annual First Night Out event in Currier Park each August, to name just a few examples.

We extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to Deputy Chief Aldsworth for all he has done for the City of Barre and the greater community. We wish him the very best in his next chapter.

This morning at 10:04 AM, the Barre City Fire Department was dispatched to a reported vehicle fire at 411 N. Main Street (Beverage Baron) in the City of Barre.

Upon arrival, crews found a vehicle parked approximately four feet from a structure, with the passenger compartment heavily involved in fire. Firefighters acted quickly and were able to extinguish the fire before it spread to the nearby building.

During the investigation, it was determined that at the time the fire started, two children were secured in child restraint seats inside the vehicle. Thankfully, two bystanders noticed smoke coming from the vehicle and immediately took action, entering the vehicle and safely removing the 4- and 7-year-old children from the back seat.

Their quick and decisive actions likely prevented serious, potentially life-threatening injuries.

The Barre City Fire Department cleared the scene at 10:46 AM.
