🚒 Barrington Fire & Rescue Receives $73,904 FEMA Grant to Protect Firefighter Health 🚒
We're proud to share that at its October 5th meeting, the Barrington Select Board voted to accept a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant that will fund a vehicle exhaust removal system in our fire station.
Diesel exhaust is a known cancer-causing agent and one of the biggest health risks firefighters face, even inside their own stations. Every time a fire truck or ambulance starts up in the bays, exhaust can drift into the areas where our crews live, work, and store their gear.
The new system connects directly to each vehicle's tailpipe, captures the exhaust the moment the engine starts, and vents it safely outside, then releases automatically as the vehicle heads out on a call. It will serve all seven of our apparatus and ambulance positions.
💲 Federal funds cover about 95% of the $77,600 project. The Town's share of $3,695 comes from existing fire equipment funds, so no new tax dollars are needed.
Thank you to FEMA and the Barrington Select Board for supporting this investment in the long-term health of the people who answer your calls. Healthier firefighters mean a stronger department for our community. We'll share updates as the project moves forward!
