Fire Prevention Week is here!

This year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” ⚡

Lithium-ion batteries power so many of the devices we use every day, from phones and tablets to e-bikes, power tools and more. Taking a few simple precautions when charging can make a big difference.

Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing practical safety tips to help you, your family, and your home charge safely, recognize warning signs, and reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires.

• Use the correct charger for your device.
• Charge on a hard, flat surface.
• Unplug devices when they are fully charged.
• Stop using batteries or devices that are unusually hot, swollen, leaking, smoking or giving off an unusual odor.

Follow along with the Barrington Fire Department this week as we Charge into Fire Safety!

It is with heavy hearts that the Barrington Fire Department announces the passing of former Fire Chief John F. Kranz, whose nearly four decades of service helped shape our department and the generations of firefighters who followed.

Chief Kranz joined the Barrington Fire Department in 1957 and served our community until 1995, advancing through the ranks and being elected Fire Chief in 1979, serving in that role until the department transitioned to its first full-time Fire Chief in 1982.

Chief Kranz was a hands-on leader who led by example. Whether pulling the first attack line, laddering a building, operating new rescue equipment such as the Hurst Tool, or preparing apparatus for a call, he was never afraid to be the first one in and the last one finished.

Living just a block from the station and operating his business nearby on Hough Street, Chief Kranz was often among the first to arrive, day or night, to make sure the apparatus was ready to respond. His mechanical knowledge was an invaluable asset to the entire department, and he worked tirelessly alongside his fellow firefighters to repair and maintain equipment in-house so crews could always be ready for the next call. He also helped instill a culture in which training, safety, teamwork and service came first, while never losing the sense of humor and camaraderie that is still present at the Village of Barrington Fire Department.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Kranz family, his friends and all those whose lives he touched during his many years of service.

Service Information
A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026, at 10:30 a.m., with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m., at St. Anne Catholic Church, 120 Ela St., Barrington. Inurnment will follow at St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to JourneyCare Hospice.

Probationary Firefighter/Paramedic Brianna Spetka continues to put in the work at the Harper College Public Safety Programs!

We had the opportunity to see FF/PM Spetka in action last week during live-fire training, where recruits worked through hose drills, water supply operations, teamwork and plenty of repetition. These fundamental fireground skills are built through hands-on training until they become second nature when it matters most.

We’re proud to support Harper College’s Fire Academy and the instructors who continue to challenge recruits both physically and mentally while preparing them for the realities of the fire service.

Keep up the great work, FF/PM Spetka! We’re proud to have you representing the Village of Barrington Fire Department and look forward to following you through the rest of your academy journey.
