The SQMS Center is one of five research centers funded by the U.S. Department of Energy as part of a national initiative to develop and deploy the world’s most powerful quantum computers and sensors.

The center is rooted in Fermilab's expertise in superconducting radio-frequency cavities, materials and cryogenics — technologies originally developed for particle accelerators — and in the lab's mission to explore the universe at its most fundamental level.

"We built SQMS deliberately as a multi-institutional center that unites expertise from laboratories, universities, companies and multiple disciplines," said SQMS director Anna Grassellino.

Six years after Grassellino founded the center, she provides perspective on the first six years of the center at

The Muon g-2 collaboration recently announced a new measurement of a property of the muon called the electric dipole moment. This result shows that if a muon EDM exists, it must be smaller than what the Muon experiment can currently detect.

The experiment, designed to measure the magnetic moment of the muon, is also sensitive to a particle property called the electric dipole moment.

Students from the University of Iowa are building and testing components to help detect ghostlike particles called neutrinos.

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment will be the world’s most advanced and comprehensive experiment dedicated to understanding neutrinos.

In addition to providing the best data on neutrino interactions currently possible, DUNE will explore some of the most puzzling aspects of our universe with unprecedented precision and open the door to new insights into … well, everything.

DUNE comprises state-of-the-art particle detectors: one at Fermilab and one deep underground at Sanford Underground Research Facility. The far detector will be the largest of its type ever built and record neutrino interactions with unprecedented precision.

Kim Budil, Director of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, visited Fermilab this week!

She gave a talk on how LLNL built the National Ignition Facility, the only lab on Earth to achieve fusion ignition. Following the public talk, Budil, Fermilab director Norbert Holtkamp, Argonne National Laboratory director Paul Kearns, and industry leaders participated in a panel discussion on the future of fusion.

The Fermilab-hosted Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment will be the world’s most advanced and comprehensive experiment dedicated to understanding neutrinos.

Just as NIF pushed the boundaries to achieve fusion ignition, Fermilab is now embarking on a similar monumental journey with DUNE to unlock fundamental secrets of the universe. These ambitious endeavors exemplify how cutting-edge science and technology drive innovation, ultimately benefitting humanity.

Fusion science has made remarkable progress, but now comes an equally important question: What technologies will be needed to turn that progress into a practical future?

At Fermilab, we’re exploring how technologies developed for particle physics—from superconducting systems and cryogenics to advanced accelerators, materials and computing—could help address some of fusion’s most challenging engineering problems.

Tomorrow, Oct. 13, join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Director Kim Budil at Fermilab for “Fusion: The Promise, the Progress and the Path Ahead.”

Then stay as leaders from Fermilab and other national laboratories, as well as industry, discuss what it will take to transform the promise of fusion energy into tangible benefits for society.
