The Large Tolype moth is whimsy maxing with all of that luscious fluff! Look at how cute! That dense fuzz isn't just for looks though; it helps this moth blend into its surroundings, retain heat on cooler nights, and even protects it from a bat's echolocation!

Let's dive a bit deeper into what exactly that fluff is and what it does. The "fur" is actually slender, modified scales composed primarily of chitin-the same material of many insect and crustacean exoskeletons. This fluff acts as a natural acoustic that absorbs up to 85% of the ultrasonic echolocation clicks used by hunting bats. Those specialized scales are hollow and absorb the bat clicks instead of sending them back to the bat-altering them of their prey's location.

Did you know that persimmon seeds can predict the winter?

According to Appalachian folklore, the silverware you see inside a persimmon seed tells what kind of winter we’ll have!

A spoon means a cold, snowy winter
A fork means a mild winter
A knife means a cold, icy winter

Every seed we’ve cracked this year has had a spoon….get your snow shovels ready!

This Great Blue Heron was gracefully walking along the edge of the pond. Master ambush predators, they can appear motionless before they strike like lightning to grab their prey (sometimes spearing it with their long, sharp beak). Great Blue Herons usually eat fish, frogs, and even gophers and other small mammals!
These large herons were once in decline, but they've made a remarkable recovery with the return of beavers and the habitat they create.
Have you seen a Great Blue Heron recently?

Did you know that lightening bugs start life as larvae living in leaf litter on the ground?!?!

Firefly larvae, cutely called glow worms, spend months hiding under fallen leaves where they hunt invertebrates like slugs and snails, helping keep gardens healthy. By raking up and removing leaves in the fall, you are also removing important habitat for next year's fireflies, as well as many other insects and amphibians!

October is a great time to watch these insects put on a show! Glow worms have abdominal segments that produce a bioluminescent glow and can be seen lighting up the ground in the fall.

Want more lightening bugs next summer? Leave some leaves! A natural layer of leaf litter provides shelter for firefly larvae through the winter and supports a healthier backyard ecosystem.
