Harvest is upon us here in the Hoosier state which means you are much more likely to meet large farm equipment on the roadway. ๐Ÿšœ๐ŸŒฝ๐ŸŒฑ Farm equipment is wide and sometimes takes up most of the road. Be careful when passing equipment this fall.

โš ๏ธโ€ผ๏ธ ATTENTION BATESVILLE DRIVERS AND PEDESTRIANSโ€ผ๏ธโš ๏ธ

As part of Batesville's SR 229 sidewalk project, there is a new HAWK (High-Intensity Activated CrossWalK) signal near Arlington Drive and Wessel Road.

For Drivers and Cyclists Traveling on the Street:

๐Ÿš— Unlike regular traffic signals, HAWK signals only illuminate when a
pedestrian activates the crossing button.

๐Ÿš— Always proceed with caution when the signal is off.

๐Ÿš— Slow down when the signal is flashing yellow.

๐Ÿš— Prepare to stop when the signal is solid yellow.

๐Ÿš— Stop when the signal is solid red.

๐Ÿš— When the signal is flashing red, make sure to keep an eye out for all crosswalk travelers and proceed with caution.

For Pedestrians and Cyclists Using the Crosswalk:

๐Ÿšถ The HAWK signal works similar to other regular traffic signals.

๐Ÿšถ Lights on the HAWK signal are activated by pushing the crossing button or waving at the white box area above the crossing button.

๐Ÿšถ Start crossing when the walking human symbol is on; continue crossing during the countdown.

๐Ÿšถ Cyclists should dismount and walk their bicycles while crossing the crosswalk.

๐Ÿšถ Do not cross when the red hand symbol is on.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of retired Fire Chief Donald Weigel.

Chief Weigel devoted 45 years to serving our community, beginning his career with the Batesville Fire Department in 1951 and retiring in 1996. Throughout his distinguished career, he served as Assistant Fire Chief for many years before leading the department as Fire Chief for the final 18 years of his service.

Chief Weigel was also a founding member of our EMS Division and was one of the first Emergency Medical Technicians to serve our community. He played an instrumental role in building the foundation of the Batesville Fire Department as we know it today. His vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to serving our community helped shape generations of firefighters and EMS providers.

Chief Weigel's dedication to the citizens of Batesville and his commitment to the fire service will never be forgotten. His legacy lives on through the department he helped build, the lives he touched, and the members who continue to serve in his footsteps.

Please keep Chief Weigel's family, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
