🐢 Congratulations to LDWF’s Keri Lejeune, a 2026 Champion of Conservation!

Louisiana State Herpetologist Keri Lejeune was recently honored as one of Garden & Gun Magazine’s 2026 Champions of Conservation during the magazine’s fifth annual celebration in Highlands, North Carolina. The event brought together conservation leaders working to protect the South’s wildlife and aquatic habitats.

Keri helped lead a major conservation milestone for Louisiana by developing a plan to protect wild turtles from commercial harvest for the global pet and meat trades. The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission approved the plan in 2025, strengthening protections for these native species.

Through valued conservation partnerships, her work also includes returning captive alligator snapping turtles to the wild, restoring wetlands for the reintroduction of dusky gopher frogs, improving nest protection for ringed map turtles, and acquiring vital habitat in watersheds such as the Bogue Chitto River.

Join us in celebrating Keri’s dedication to Louisiana’s wildlife and this well-deserved recognition! 👏

🔥 Prescribed Burns Help Keep Louisiana Marshes Healthy! 🔥

Over the past two weeks, LDWF staff conducted prescribed burns at White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area, treating 1,800 acres on Sept. 30 and Oct. 7.

These freshwater marshes depend on periodic fire to maintain healthy habitat, support diverse plant and animal communities, and reduce fuel loads that can contribute to damaging wildfires.

Prescribed burning is an important tool in protecting Louisiana’s wetlands and the wildlife that call them home!

🦆 That’s a wrap on Louisiana’s first-ever experimental black-bellied whistling duck season! We would like to thank all hunters who participated and want to remind waterfowl hunters who participated to report both harvest and effort.

This special season would not have been possible without the leadership of Governor Jeff Landry and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Because this was an experimental season, it was important that hunters only shot BBWD, and based on LDWF’s observations, hunters showed overwhelming compliance with shooting only this target species. By being good stewards in your participation out in the field, you helped to make this season a historic success.

📢 Hunted or not, if you obtained a permit, you must report your harvest and effort by Oct. 26 to remain eligible for next year’s permit.

🐟 The LDWF Fall stocking season has officially kicked off!

On October 6, 2026, LDWF Inland Fisheries’ biologists began the fall season by stocking 68,200 channel catfish. Within the next three months, biologists will be stocking Channel Catfish, Black and White Crappie, Bluegill, Redear Sunfish, and Florida-strain Largemouth Bass in public waterbodies all around the state!

📍 Recent Channel Catfish stocking activity by LDWF Inland Fisheries biologists from October 6 to October 8 included:

Anacoco Lake (Vernon): 26,200

Chatham Lake (Jackson): 5,300

Buhlow Lake (Rapides): 5,800

Lafreniere Park (Jefferson): 3,700

Crooked Creek (Evangeline): 2,200

Grand Bayou Reservoir (Red River): 16,200

Henderson Lake (St. Martin): 8,300

Moore Park (Lafayette): 500

🐟 Support Louisiana's fisheries! When you purchase a Louisiana Largemouth Bass license plate, revenue generated will go to LDWF and the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation to help fund the production and stocking of Largemouth Bass in Louisiana.
