🚧 Construction is underway on the Grand Isle Shoreline Breakwaters! 🏗

Our federal partners at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) have begun placing rocks for the first of 31 new breakwaters that will help close a critical gap in the existing shoreline protection around Grand Isle.

Each breakwater will be approximately 250 feet long and 250 feet apart. This spacing will allow offshore sediment to flow through the system and help nourish Grand Isle Beach.

Together, the new breakwaters will create a continuous system of protection along the island's Gulf shoreline, helping reduce the wave erosion and provide protection from storm surge.

This partnership between CPRA and USACE is helping strengthen protection for Louisiana's only inhabited barrier island and the community that calls Grand Isle home.

Construction is expected to be completed in July 2027.

Today in New Orleans, CPRA joined engineers and professionals from across the country at the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Tri-Regional Joint Engineer Training Symposium.

CPRA Executive Director Michael Hare delivered a keynote address, highlighting the challenges facing Louisiana's coast and the innovative projects and partnerships helping build a more resilient future for the state.

Earlier in the day, newly appointed Deputy Executive Director Rudy Simoneaux updated attendees on the Chandeleur Islands Restoration Project. Scheduled to begin next year, this project will restore approximately 13 miles of the heavily eroded barrier island chain, strengthening coastal protection and restoring critical habitat.

For more than a century, SAME has brought together leaders from the military, government, industry and academic communities to tackle complex engineering challenges, strengthen partnerships and advance solutions that support our nation's most critical missions.

We're proud to be part of that conversation and to share the work underway to protect and restore Louisiana's coast.

🌱Getting our hands dirty for a stronger coast! 💪

Last week, our partners at Restore or Retreat brought more than 40 volunteers together for a planting along the South Lafourche Levee in Golden Meadow.

CPRA awarded Restore or Retreat more than $30,000 in matching funds for the planting as part of our Conservation and Restoration Partnership Program.

Volunteers spent the day getting muddy while planting nearly 9,000 cordgrass plants and 250 roseau cane plugs along a 3,000-foot section of exposed levee. These plantings will help reduce erosion and strengthen the levee against wave action and storm surge.

Thank you to Restore or Retreat and all the volunteers who rolled up their sleeves to help strengthen this section of our coast and build a more resilient future for South Louisiana!

🚧 Project Update 📣

The Breton Landbridge and Marsh Creation (West) Project has passed the halfway point in construction.

The area was heavily impacted by Hurricane Katrina, resulting in significant wetland and land loss. Now, this project is restoring 634 acres of marsh across five marsh creation cells using dredged material from Grand Lake.

The project will strengthen the Grand Lake shoreline by constructing 13,700 linear feet of lake d**e, helping reestablish a more robust land mass.

As a key component of the larger Breton Sound landbridge, the project will help control saltwater intrusion and wave erosion in the basin, while restoring critical wetlands and wildlife habitat.

Construction began in July and is expected to be completed in Spring of 2027.
