The East Baton Rouge District Attorney’s Office joined WAFB Channel 9 and The Baton Rouge Clinic, AMC for Pink for a Day in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer touches families across our parish, including our own office family. We wore pink to support those fighting, celebrate survivors, and honor those we’ve lost. Early detection saves lives, so please talk with your doctor about screening.

District Attorney Hillar Moore issued the following statement today regarding a pending hate crime case. Our office has reached out to the victim's family.

"I understand the concerns a photograph from a recent public event has raised, and I want to address them directly.

I had never met the individuals pictured with me and did not know who they were or their connection to a pending case before my Office when the photograph was taken. As district attorney, I attend events throughout our parish and meet thousands of people nearly every week. Taking a photograph with someone does not mean I know or endorse them.

My Office has not offered a plea deal in this case, and we are prosecuting it to the fullest extent of the law. While I do not publicly discuss the details of pending prosecutions, no photograph, political affiliation, or personal relationship has ever influenced or will ever influence how my Office handles this or any case. Everyone is accountable under the same law.

I have always made myself accessible to the people of this parish, and that includes people whose families may be involved in matters before my Office. Being accessible does not mean offering special treatment.

Let me be clear — racism and intimidation have no place in East Baton Rouge Parish. The allegations in this case are serious, and my Office is treating them with the seriousness they deserve. Our responsibility is to seek justice for the victim, and that commitment has not changed."

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and behind every statistic is a voice, a story, and a survivor.

Through the Stop the Loss initiative, our Office is dedicated to holding high-risk domestic violence offenders accountable and removing illegal fi****ms from our streets, so survivors can find safety and justice.

In 2026 alone, our team has handled over 1,700 cases and arrested 293 high-risk offenders to prevent repeat violence.

Hear from one survivor on what safety and support mean to her.

If you or someone you know needs help, local resources and advocacy are available. You are not alone.

In 2023, the East Baton Rouge Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (Ebr Cjcc), in partnership with our Office, the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys and the 19th Judicial District, launched a retail theft diversion program. Rather than cycling repeat offenders through traditional prosecution, the program offers an alternative: address the underlying issues driving the theft.

Assistant District Attorney April Landry leads the DA's Office participation in the initiative. Participants gain access to employment training, job placement assistance, financial literacy classes, and mental health services. To date, 51 individuals have participated in the program, and 23 have graduated. The goal is simple: interrupt the pattern before it hardens into a criminal record.

Tammy C., a program participant, felt the difference. "I'm going to have a better life. I thought I had no credit, I was too far gone because I did something on a whim; but I have learned so much," she said. "I didn't know about financial literacy, about credit repair. Now I know I can build my future."

Today is the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims. We pause to honor the lives taken by violence in East Baton Rouge Parish and the families who carry that loss every day.

Our Victim Assistance Coordinators walk alongside families from the first phone call through the final verdict and beyond. They explain every step of the process, sit beside families in the courtroom, make sure their voices are heard, and connect them with counseling, support, and resources when they need them most.

Justice doesn't bring back the people we've lost. But the families left behind deserve an Office that fights for them with everything it has. To every family we serve: we remember your loved ones, and we stand with you.

The District Attorney's Office has opened a criminal investigation into an alleged sexual assault involving a student-athlete and an LSU student that may have occurred on LSU's campus in October 2025.

We are working with LSU Police, Baton Rouge Police, and other agencies to gather all relevant evidence and information. To protect the integrity of this investigation and the rights of all involved, we will have no further comment at this time.

JUSTICE SERVED

In a recent juvenile delinquency trial, the court returned guilty verdicts on three counts:
• Illegal Possession of a Handgun by a Juvenile
• Possession of a Machine Gun, a felony
• Resisting an Officer

Because this matter involves a juvenile, identifying information is not being shared.

The verdicts bring accountability in a case involving the illegal possession of dangerous weapons and resistance to law enforcement. We thank everyone involved in the investigation, preparation, and prosecution of this case.

Behind every victim who receives justice is a Victim Assistance Coordinator—a tireless advocate navigating trauma, grief, and systemic complexity on behalf of crime survivors. This summer, the EBRDA piloted an innovative program to support the people supporting victims.

Through a partnership with the University of Pennsylvania's Master of Applied Positive Psychology program (MAPP), Victim Assistance Coordinators completed a series of evidence-based micro-interventions focused on character strengths, job crafting, and meaning-making. The project, titled "Sustaining Light at the End of the Tunnel," was designed to enhance psychological resources and reduce burnout risk in a high-demand environment.

Kristen Raby, Director of Victim Services, oversaw the initiative. "Our VACs are the light at the end of the tunnel for victims, and they pour everything into that mission," she said. "This program acknowledges what they're already doing and helps them sustain it in a way that protects their own well-being."

The MAPP program was highly competitive, and our Office was selected from a national pool of applicants. The intervention materials developed this summer will remain available to the VAC team for ongoing use.

This summer, 20 high school students got an inside look at how the criminal justice system actually works. Through our partnership with BRYC, Legal Fellows gives rising 9th–12th graders hands-on experience in the courthouse—from observing real cases to learning how prosecutors make decisions. The program culminates in a student-led community forum where young people ask the hard questions about justice, ethics, and community.

One Fellow, Henry Kroes, described the impact: "The professionals I am meeting are helping me navigate my path and helping me feel more goals are attainable."
