On September 21st, 1938 the infamous Long Island Express Hurricane made landfall in parts of New York and New England. This hurricane is considered to be the worst in Long Island history and is responsible for extreme property damage and the loss of approximately 700 lives. Due to the limited meteorological technology of the era, this hurricane went largely undetected until it made landfall.

These are a few pictures from Fire Island from the aftermath of the Storm The Bay Shore Historical Society has a collection of photograph from the 1938 Hurricanes that can be viewed at the Gibson-Mack-Holt house on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 1pm-4pm.

šŸˆCongratulations to Bay Shore Football for starting their 100th historic season! In 1927, beloved chemistry teacher Clifton "Clif" LaPlatney coached Bay Shore High School's first football team. Bay Shore football players have a long and storied history and have made our community proud. We are excited to celebrate this historic milestone, and we know that Bay Shore Football will continue to strive for greatness.

To honor this occasion, we wanted to highlight a few of Bay Shore's historic teams. These pictures are of the first football team in 1927, the undefeated championship team of 1944, the undefeated championship team of 1969, and the championship team of 1984.

Reminder: The Bay Shore Historical Society will meet this Thursday, September 17, 2026 at 7 PM at the Bay Shore - Brightwaters Public Library (1 South Country Rd Brightwaters, NY).

Guest speaker John Lazzaro will present "A Vanishing New York, Ruins Across the Empire State". New York is filled with forsaken buildings, each ravaged by the exploits of modernization, each having fascinating histories. Photographer and author John Lazzaro traveled the state, capturing what's left of such places before they are inevitably swept away by time. We will explore over 40 of the most evocative abandoned sites in the Empire State and put their individual stories in the larger context of New York’s historical legacy.

The meeting is open to the public at no charge. Refreshments will be served. Learn more at: https://www.bayshorehistoricalsociety.org/programs-news

25 years later, we pause to honor the lives lost and the families forever changed on September 11, 2001. We must remember the heroes and first responders who showed incredible courage. Many from Long Island stepped up to do whatever they could to help. Bay Shore Fire Island Ferries Inc. answered the call to duty and sent three ferries to Manhattan to evacuate stranded workers.

This Fire Island News article, written by Bay Shore Historical Society member Dr. Christopher V***a, highlights the work the Fire Island Ferries did in the wake of the attacks.

We remember those who were taken from us and the courageous heroes who sacrificed their lives that day. Twenty-five years later, their stories and sacrifices remain in our hearts. Always remembered. Forever honored. Never forgotten.

These are excerpts from the Bay Shore School District Memorial Booklet, September 11, 2001. These booklets were commissioned to pay tribute to the bravery exhibited on 9/11/2001 and reflect on the historic impact of that harrowing day.
