As Fire Prevention Week comes to a close, we want to leave you with a few reminders.

Lithium-ion batteries are extremely common and offer many beneficial uses. They can also create severe fire hazards if not used, cared for, and disposed of properly.

Remember....
- Charge tools/e-bikes in a dry, well-ventilated area (outside if possible)
- Use the charger made for that specific product
- Stop using if battery becomes very hot or swells
- When the battery is fully charged, unplug it
- Only charge devices on top of hard, noncombustible surfaces

The Beachwood Public Works Dept will accept lithium-ion batteries that need to be disposed of (cover terminals with electrical tape before disposing). **If the battery is swollen, damaged, or overheating, please contact Public Works first for direction.

Stay safe and enjoy your weekend!

One of the most important warning signs of a failing lithium-ion battery is excessive heat.

Other warning signs include swelling, unusual odors, hissing noises, or smoke. When a lithium-ion battery fails, it can enter a process called thermal runaway, causing temperatures to rise rapidly and potentially resulting in a fire or explosion.

If your phone, tablet, or other battery-powered device becomes unusually hot, stop using it immediately and disconnect it from power if safe to do so. Never attempt to charge a swollen or damaged battery.

Recognizing these warning signs early can help prevent a dangerous situation!

The Beachwood Fire Department is saddened to share the passing of retired Lieutenant Robert “Bob” Wood.

Lt. Wood joined the Beachwood Fire Department on July 22, 1974, and served our community for more than 24 years before retiring on September 28, 1998. He served 18 of those years as a Lieutenant and was the first full-time member to retire from the Beachwood Fire Department.

We are grateful for Lt. Wood’s many years of dedicated service to the City of Beachwood and for the role he played in the history of our department.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

🔋Did you know?

A 2026 NIST study estimates there were roughly 198,000 structure fires involving lithium-ion batteries in the U.S. from 2011 - 2023. The same study found that lithium-ion battery fires appear to be increasing by about 10% each year.

These batteries are found in everything from phones and power tools to e-bikes and scooters. Damaged batteries, improper charging, incompatible chargers, and overheating can all create a serious fire risk.

Always use manufacturer-approved chargers, avoid damaged batteries, and immediately stop using any battery that swells, overheats, smokes, or gives off an unusual odor.

FF Brett Anderson, a member of the Chagrin/Southeast HazMat Team, recently completed the 40-hour Highway Emergency Response Specialist (HERS) course at SERTC in Pueblo, Colorado.

The course focused on hands-on training for highway hazmat incidents, including cargo tank leaks, chemical protective equipment, and realistic scenarios involving flammable, toxic, and other hazardous materials.

This training is especially important in Beachwood, with I-271 serving as a designated hazmat transportation route through Northeast Ohio.

Training like this helps keep our members prepared and our community protected

Last night, FF Mike Holtzman was recognized by the City of North Ridgeville for his lifesaving actions at the North Ridgeville Corn Festival.

A few months ago, FF Holtzman and two others were attending the festival when a fellow attendee suffered cardiac arrest. The three immediately began CPR and used an AED until the local Fire Department arrived.

Thanks to their quick actions, the man survived and was able to attend last night’s meeting to help recognize the individuals who saved his life.

We’re proud to have members like Mike representing the Beachwood Fire Department. Congratulations, Mike!
