Lums Pond State Park 1068 Howell School Road, Bear, DE 19701 www.destateparks.com (302) 368-6989 Lums Pond State Park is built around the largest freshwater pond in Delaware.

The park features excellent fishing, sports facilities, hiking trails and more on its 1790 acres on the north side of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. Lums Pond itself covers 200 acres, and although there is no swimming allowed, boat rentals and fishing provide water-bound recreation in the summer months. A boat launching ramp and two piers allow easy access to the water. Before the pond existed, St. Georges Creek flowed through the hardwood forest and was the site of several Native American hunting camps. The creek was dammed in the early 1800's when the C & D canal was built. Water from the pond was used to fill the locks of the canal and power a small mill. This area was first used as a state park in 1963.

Why do some trees *not* change color? 🌲
Pines, spruces, and holly are all examples of trees that keep their green leaves active all year round. These trees all have different answers to surviving the drought of winter. Thin needle leaves reduce leaf surface area so the tree loses less water to evaporation and the waxy coating on the leaves of holly and rhododendron seals water inside, allowing these trees to make the most of what little water is available.

Where do all these different colors come from?
Three pigments are responsible for the colors of leaves: chlorophyll (green), carotenoids (yellow/orange), and anthocyanins (red/purple). Leaves always contain carotenoids, but during the spring and summer the green from the chlorophyll masks over it. As the chlorophyll fades away in the fall, the yellow of the carotenoids shows through. Some trees will also produce anthocyanins during the process of going dormant, and those pigments will turn leaves red or purple!

We all love the brilliant autumn colors that decorate our forests in the fall, but why do they happen?
Just like bears fattening up for hibernation, trees have to prepare for the harsh conditions of winter too.
Trees struggle to drink water if it’s all frozen as ice and snow! Trees lose water through their leaves via evaporation, and in winter the tree would lose more water than it can gain by keeping its leaves. To avoid that, the tree goes dormant, sap settles underground and the leaves go brown and fall off so the tree doesn’t have to worry about the energy to keep them.

Where do the monarchs go? 👀
Each fall, the monarch butterflies begin their long migration down to Mexico. The butterflies born here now will make the long journey all the way to central Mexico to spend the winter!
When they return in the spring, it won’t be the same butterflies that left: it’ll be their grandchildren! It can take three generations to make it all the way back to Delaware.🦋
