Please keep Chief Kresta’s family and East Bernard Fire Dept. in your thoughts and prayer’s.

It is with profound sorrow and the heaviest of hearts that the East Bernard Volunteer Fire Department announces the tragic passing of Fire Chief Randy Kresta.

Chief Kresta devoted nearly 40 years of his life to serving the East Bernard community, protecting his neighbors, and helping those in need. His loss is deeply felt by his fellow firefighters, family, friends, not just in East Bernard, but throughout Wharton County and The State of Texas.

Chief Kresta answered the call whenever his community needed him, leading with courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication. The word “no” was simply not in Chief Kresta’s vocabulary. Regardless of the circumstances, the time of day, or the challenge before him, he was always willing to step up and serve others. His commitment to his community and his fellow firefighters was a true reflection of the man he was.

Nearly four decades of service is more than a career — it is a legacy of selflessness, sacrifice, leadership, and love for the community and the fire service he so proudly served. Chief Kresta’s impact will never be forgotten, and his absence will leave a void that cannot be filled.

During this incredibly difficult time, we ask that you keep Chief Kresta’s family, loved ones, and our entire fire department family in your thoughts and prayers as we grieve the loss of a beloved chief, husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and dedicated public servant.

Rest easy, Chief. Thank you for your many years of service, your countless sacrifices, and your unwavering commitment to the citizens of East Bernard.

You answered the call for nearly 40 years. Now, it is our turn to carry on your legacy. God Bless You, Chief!!

With dry conditions continuing across Fort Bend County and an outdoor burn ban now in effect, it’s especially important to be mindful of everyday activities that can accidentally start a wildfire.

Most wildfires are human-caused — and it only takes one spark in dry vegetation to start a fire that can quickly spread.

A few simple precautions can make a big difference:

🚗 Avoid driving or parking on dry grass, and make sure tow chains are secured and not dragging.

🚬 Never toss ci******es on the ground, and dispose of ashes in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid.

🔥 Use grills and smokers on gravel, concrete or other non-combustible surfaces and keep water nearby.

🌾 Keep grass maintained, but avoid mowing when conditions are extremely dry, hot or windy.

💨 Pay attention to the weather. Heat, drought, low humidity and wind can dramatically increase wildfire danger.

🚫 And most importantly, follow the Fort Bend County burn ban and all outdoor burning restrictions.

08/27/2026

Fort Bend County has issued an outdoor burn ban for all unincorporated areas of the county, effective today, August 27, at 5 p.m.

Extreme heat, worsening drought conditions, and limited rainfall have significantly increased the risk of wildfires. As of today, Fort Bend County’s Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) is 634 on a scale of 0–800, indicating significantly dry conditions and an increased potential for fire activity.

🚫 While the burn ban is in effect, outdoor burning is prohibited in unincorporated Fort Bend County. This includes:
• Burning trash or debris
• Campfires
• Burn barrels
• Other open-flame burning that is not fully contained as required by the County’s order

🔥 Please do your part to prevent wildfires. Even a small spark can quickly become dangerous under these dry conditions. Use extra caution with anything that could ignite dry grass or vegetation, including discarded ci******es, hot equipment, welding, and vehicles parked over dry grass.

The Fort Bend County Fire Marshal’s Office will continue monitoring drought and weather conditions. The burn ban may be rescinded when conditions improve.
