John P. Odom — the man Odom Academy is named after — is buried right here in Blanchette Cemetery.

Before there was a modern school building… before integration… before the resources were equal — there were educators who built institutions from almost nothing.

John P. Odom was one of those leaders.

As an early African American educator in Beaumont’s Pear Orchard community, he helped lay the foundation for Black education during segregation.

His work contributed to the development of what would become a lasting educational legacy in our city.

Today, students attend Odom Academy — but many don’t realize that the man behind the name rests in one of our historic community cemeteries.

Blanchette Cemetery is more than a burial ground.

It is a record of leadership.

A record of sacrifice.

A record of builders.

At Community Cemeteries, we don’t just cut grass — we preserve history.
When we maintain these grounds, we are honoring educators, pastors, veterans, entrepreneurs, and families who shaped Beaumont long before recognition came.

Preserving the past: Experts hold local historic cemeteries workshop Local historians collaborate with Texas Historical Commission experts to preserve historic cemeteries, ensuring their protection and future care.

Community Cemeteries is proud to announce the successful dedication of the new historical marker at Blanchette Cemetery.

This meaningful achievement would not have been possible without the leadership, vision, and tireless work of Historic Sacred Spaces (HSS) — the primary organizer and major driving force behind this effort.

HSS brought together an incredible coalition of community partners, including:
• Beaumont Historical Association
• Jefferson County Historical Commission
• Lamar University History Club
• Galveston Bay - Buffalo Soldiers MC

Through their collaboration, research, and commitment to preserving our cultural heritage, this long-overdue recognition has finally become a reality.

During the ceremony, Historic Sacred Spaces was honored with:
• A signed proclamation from a Texas State Representative
• A Certificate of Appreciation presented by Formic Holdings and Community Cemeteries Inc.

We are deeply grateful for HSS and every organization that contributed to this historic moment. Blanchette Cemetery now stands proudly with its new marker — a reminder of our shared history and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
