Israel Gaither became The Salvation Army’s first-ever Black Salvation Army National Commander in 2006.
In addition to this landmark appointment, Commissioner Gaither is known, along with his wife, fellow Commissioner Eva Gaither, as the first-ever biracial couple to serve at The Salvation Army.
Marrying in 1967 during the Civil Rights Movement, their union was controversial to many, but their love for one another and immense bravery and dedication to their callings proved that anything is possible when you fight for what you believe is true and just.
We honor and cherish their story as part of not just the rich history of The Salvation Army, but also the rich Black History in America. ♥️

Support that arrives before a crisis becomes permanent is as crucial as support that arrives during a crisis.
For many families, that moment looks like a parent working extra hours, a child sensing the stress, and one missed paycheck threatening housing or utilities. Monthly support allows The Salvation Army to step in at that critical point, covering gaps, stabilizing households, and giving families the space to move forward.
When help is consistent, families can focus on what comes next instead of what might fall apart.
Hope leads the way because people choose to show up, month after month.

Ensign Mabel Broome became The Salvation Army’s first Black officer in the United States in 1915.
Facing adversity from every turn during her nearly 15-year tenure as an officer, Broome is remembered for her hard work and immense bravery as a “Slum Sister”, aiding Chicago’s most impoverished communities. These communities included homeless mothers and their children, brothels and saloons, and the sick and disabled.
Her bravery and dedication to her calling will never be forgotten. ♥️
Joy grows where people gather.

OUR HISTORY
The Salvation Army began in England in 1852 by William Booth when he and his wife, Catherine, helped fight for the souls of lost men and women. Within 10 years of operating, their organization, known as “The Christian Mission”, had over 1,000 volunteers and evangelists. When Booth read a printer’s proof of the 1878 “Christian Mission” annual report, he noticed the statement “The Christian Mission is a volunteer army.” Crossing out the words “volunteer army,” he penned in “Salvation Army. From those words came the basis of the foundation deed of The Salvation Army.
In 1888, Adam Janelli came to America and settled in Dallas, Texas. One day, the rough citizens of the then frontier town, were startled when Janelli, wearing his Salvation Army uniform, began preaching on a downtown street corner. Every time he preached, people were finding Christ. Eager to get The Salvation Army established in Texas, Janelli wrote letters to General William Booth in London asking that Officers be sent to Texas. His letter barrage got so thick that the official word was given and The Salvation Army of Texas opened in 1889. Janelli gave both material and spiritual help to the poor and homeless, and to the people of Dallas, he became known as “Mr. Salvation Army.”
