A New Era Begins
for Beaver Falls’ Historic Carnegie Library

Renamed H. R. Smith – Carnegie Library & Event Center, the 1903 landmark announces plans for preservation, revitalization and expanded community use.

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Oct. 21, 2026) — One of Beaver Falls’ most treasured landmarks is beginning a new chapter. The Carnegie Free Library of Beaver Falls, which opened in 1903 through the generosity of industrialist Andrew Carnegie, is entering a period of preservation and revitalization under a new name: the H. R. Smith – Carnegie Library & Event Center.

The name recognizes the generosity of H. R. Smith, whose private support is making long-overdue preservation possible, while keeping the Carnegie name and its 123-year legacy at the center of the building’s identity.

After decades of limited financial resources and deferred maintenance, this support gives the library new opportunities to care for its historic structure and to expand its role in the community.

The Board of Trustees is exploring plans to restore the building’s historic hall, improve its event facilities and create new opportunities for cultural, educational and community activities. An architect has begun working with the Board to evaluate the building’s potential and develop concepts for its future.

As part of the transition, the original Carnegie glass above the main entrance has been carefully removed and preserved. It will be incorporated into a permanent historical display inside the building. New entrance lettering will feature both the H. R. Smith and Carnegie names.

The Board emphasized that the library’s mission is unchanged. The building will remain a place of learning and community connection, and it will continue to offer library services while adding new ways to welcome residents and visitors through music, theater, special events and educational programs. “Our goal is not simply to preserve a historic building, but to ensure that it continues to serve and inspire our community for generations to come,” said John Sanderbeck, president of the Board of Trustees.

Over the coming months, the Board will share more information about architectural concepts, restoration projects and new opportunities for community involvement. Residents are invited to follow the library’s progress at cflbf.org and on the library’s page.
