Stewards’ recent AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) training in Leesburg, VA was a blast! If you missed us on socials, we spent the week covering everything from grant writing to navigating difficult conversations and communications to capacity building and got some rare in-person time together. Our VISTAs are serving all over the US, often far apart from each other, and it was great to build some community and foster collaboration. Thank you to our incredible VISTA team for putting this event together!

🦇 Freakin bats!!🦇

Have you ever wanted to visit Oregon Caves National Monument & Preserve Come along with Sr Admin Manager for Stewards, Sage Bates, and Central Admissions Coordinator, Lauren Simms, as they got to experience the caves and critters up close on a recent site visit to meet Individual Placements in the wild 🦇

Not only did they get to see some amazing critters and cave formations, but they were able to get a sneak peek into the day-to-day service activities and projects on the preserve.

A huge thank you to the staff and placements for hosting them for the week and taking the time to show them around the preserve! Conservation Legacy

On International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, we want to highlight amazing Scientists in Parks member Jacqueline "Jacqui" Ouellette.

Jacqui spent her summer supporting fire ecology and fire management planning across National Park Service units throughout the Northeast and Southeast. Based in Hadley, Massachusetts with the NPS Northeast Regional Office, Jacqui helped park managers further their understanding of how weather conditions may influence future wildfire activity. Her projects supported the tools parks use for fire preparedness, response, recovery, and long-term resource management planning.

As a Fire Ecology Assistant, Jacqui developed wildfire season reports that can be easily updated and replicated in future years. These automated reports generate maps, graphs, tables, and written summaries of wildfire occurrence, acres burned, seasonal fire patterns, and lightning activity across parks and ecoregions. She also produced regional maps highlighting fire incidents, National Park Service units, and ecological boundaries, creating resources that staff can continue to use long after her term.

"Being a fire ecology SIP and working for NPS with a supervisor that works for the USFS is a great way to learn about interagency collaboration in concrete terms and provide regional NPS units with support for their fire planning." - Jacqueline Ouellette, Scientists in Parks Member

In honor of , we want to celebrate our partnership with Pinnacles National Park completing habitat work.

This ongoing project has supported seed collection and habitat restoration, including on-the-ground invasive species removal and native plant restoration by Individual Placements. The project also supports the regular distribution of “What’s Blooming at Pinnacles.”

Just this year, Amelia Ryan, the NPS project lead for this work, was also recognized with the Director's Award for Natural Resources Research.

Celebrating two host site supervisors supporting Stewards, who are being recognized for their service 🎉

Amelia Ryan, awarded the Director’s Award for Natural Resource Research, has served as host site supervisor for 20 individual placements with Stewards since 2019. Similarly, Stacey Torigoe, awarded the Director’s Award for Natural Resource Management, has mentored 7 individual placements at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park since 2024!

We are honored to be able to work with these incredible NPS staff and appreciate their commitment to engaging young adults in workforce development while completing priority projects at their NPS sites! Hi, I'm Ash, a Program Coordinator here at Stewards Individual Placements!

Recently, I had the honor of representing Stewards and Conservation Legacy at this year's National Speleological Society (NSS) National Speleological Society Convention in Indiana! Speleology is the science of caves and exploring the interconnected geology, biology, and hydrology hidden beneath our feet.

Attending this conference allowed me to proudly represent Stewards and our peer programs while connecting directly with management agency leaders and emerging undergrad talent. It was an opportunity to bridge the gap between subsurface science and hands-on career paths in natural resource management.

Between absorbing cutting-edge research from some of speleology’s brightest minds, catching up with incredible cavers who also share an AmeriCorps background, and jumping between hands-on workshops, my schedule was so packed I barely had time to actually get underground.

I am proud to be part of this community and grateful for the opportunity!

"What if the worst day in our history could become one of our best?"

Tomorrow is the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. What was once one of the darkest days in American history, 9/11 Day has transformed this tragedy to a day that includes hope and community. To honor those we lost and the heroes who helped us persevere, join AmeriCorps and Stewards Individual Placements to unite in service and do good by volunteering in your community.

👉 If you are looking for service opportunities near you, visit https://volunteer.911day.org/ to check out what is going on in your neck of the woods.

Whether you are picking up some trash in your community with your pup or volunteering your time at a local nonprofit, join us tomorrow in taking action in whatever way you can.

If you can't volunteer tomorrow, join in the challenge to perform 1,000,000 acts of kindness by September 11 and do something kind for someone in your community. One small act can start a movement.

Check out some photos from some amazing Stewards members volunteering on 9/11 Day last year!

Check out this article highlighting Stewards and Bureau of Indian Affairs WaterCorps members Chuck Taylor and Bradley Gooch by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC)

Serving as invasive carp early detection crew members, Chuck and Bradley spend their days on Oklahoma's Red River, aiming to learn more about the movements of adult invasive carp and conducting early detection sampling for carp larvae.

"Chuck and I are both Chickasaw and both locals, born and raised. The biggest thing is that we care about the river, and Oklahoma as a whole.” - Bradley
