The Beckley Sanitary Board provides sanitary sewer collection and wastewater treatment for the great Today more than ever, water is our passion.

For over 80 years, Beckley Sanitary Board has been providing sanitary sewer collection and wastewater treatment to the greater Beckley area. Our wastewater service area includes the City of Beckley, Town of Mabscott, and outlying communities of Cherry Hill, Sprague, Raleigh, and the Airport Industrial Park including the Beckley Federal Correctional Institute. BSB operates one of Southern West Virginia’s largest sanitary wastewater plants providing sanitary sewer to over 7,600 customers. More recently, BSB’s stormwater utility has been providing stormwater management services in the Beckley urban watershed. Federal and State mandates require that discharges from municipal separate storm sewer systems (MS4s) are regulated. Our stormwater program’s goal is to reduce the amount of pollution our community contributes to local waterways. In addition, more proactive management of stormwater infrastructure through routine maintenance and ongoing capital improvement projects help better the performance of storm sewers, in turn protecting resident’s property, health and quality of life. The stormwater utility service area is consistent with the MS4 permit boundary as designated by WV Department of Enviromental Protection. The service area includes approximately 10,000 customers within the City of Beckley, Cranberry, Prosperity, Sprague, Raleigh and Dry Hill Road communities. BSB is a leading water pollution control utility in West Virginia. Our long term goal is to improve the health of Cranberry, Whitestick, Little Whitestick, and Piney Creeks. We’d like it to be yours, too.

You might not want to hop in this jacuzzi! 🫧

This is one of Beckley Sanitary Board’s aeration basins, where oxygen bubbles help our tiny heroes do their job.

Good bacteria need oxygen to stay alive and active. They help transform wastewater into clean water by eating the "gross stuff" that is in wastewater. Once the good bacteria are full, they clump together and sink to the bottom. The cleaner water then moves on to the next stage of transformation.

No chemicals needed! Just oxygen, good bacteria, and a whole lot of bubbles! 🦠💧

Crews at Work!👷‍♂️
Our crews are out in the community working to maintain and improve stormwater systems.
From clearing and maintaining drainage structures to identifying problem areas and addressing issues in the system, this is some of the ongoing work that the BSB stormwater utility does.
Heavy rainfall can put significant pressure on stormwater systems, and while no system can prevent all flooding during intense rain events like we've seen recently, maintaining and improving infrastructure helps us better manage those conditions.
We appreciate residents who bring drainage concerns to our attention. Reports of recurring problem areas help the BSB crews identify where additional investigation and improvements may be needed.
