On Sept 2, the Beecher Fire Protection District presented a plaque to Washington Township for partnering with them in 2024 to create the Washington Township Mental Health Program that offered free metal health services for the residents of the township. The fire district oversaw the program, and the township offered the financial backing. The innovative program was only one of few programs in northern IL.

In 2026, the fire district applied for and received an IL grant to run the program entirely. Since its inception, the program has been a huge success and has helped many residents in the township deal with mental health issues quickly and discreetly. In fact, the fire district received 42% fewer mental health related calls from 2023 to 2025.

The Township was proud to be the original sponsor of the program with the Beecher Fire District, and they will continue to offer the program. The success of this and other programs is a model for mental health care, and the ultimate goal is for Will County to offer the program throughout the county.

Nearly 1 in 20 U.S. adults lives with a serious mental illness that significantly interferes with daily life. Half of all mental health conditions begin by the age of 14, and 75% begin by age 24, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
