Belchertown Adopts Town-Wide 25 MPH Thickly Settled Speed Limit
At the May 2025 Annual Town Meeting, Belchertown voted to adopt M.G.L. c. 90, ยง 17C, establishing a town-wide default speed limit of 25 mph on town-owned roads in unposted, thickly settled residential and business districts.
What does this mean for drivers?
On qualifying residential and business streets without posted speed limit the default speed limit is now 25 mph instead of 30 mph. This change is intended to improve roadway safety for everyone, including motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.
In 2025, the Belchertown Police Department responded to 336 traffic crashes, a clear reminder of why road safety remains a top priority for our community.
To help notify motorists of the change, โEntering Townโ regulatory signs have been installed at major town boundaries. Some other streets will also have signs identifying thickly settled areas.
Please note: The new 25 mph default speed limit does not override existing posted speed limits. Roads with posted speed limit signs remain subject to those posted limits.
Belchertown joins more than 100 Massachusetts municipalities that have adopted this law, including neighboring communities such as Amherst, Ludlow, Hadley, South Hadley, Easthampton, Northampton, Pelham, Holyoke, Springfield, and Chicopee.
We appreciate your cooperation in helping to make Belchertown a safer community for everyone.
