At approximately 3:15 p.m. on October 7, 2026, Belgrade High School was placed in a secure status after officers received information that a suspicious person, believed to be wanted in connection with multiple offenses in several jurisdictions, may have been in the immediate area.

Out of an abundance of caution, officers increased their presence at and around the school and worked closely with school staff to help ensure a safe and orderly dismissal. These measures were precautionary and were taken to protect students, staff, and the community while officers assessed the information and continued their search.

As the investigation developed, Belgrade Police coordinated with partner agencies across multiple jurisdictions, and several individuals were ultimately taken into custody. The investigation remains active.

We appreciate the assistance of the Billings Police Department, Bozeman Police Department, Manhattan Montana Police Department, Butte-Silver Bow Law Enforcement Department, Gallatin County Sheriff's Office, Montana Highway Patrol, and Belgrade School District #44 for their coordination and support.

Because this is an active multi-jurisdictional investigation, no additional details are being released at this time. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the Belgrade Police Department at 406-388-4262.

UPDATE: The lane has been reopened. Thank you for your patience!
-----------
Southbound traffic on Jackrabbit Lane across the I-90 overpass is currently limited to one lane after an excavator boom struck and damaged the bridge.

Local and state crews are on scene assessing the damage and taking steps to protect the bridge from further harm. The single-lane closure will remain in place while crews complete their assessment and response.

Drivers should expect delays and use alternate routes if possible. If you’re traveling through the area, please slow down and give crews plenty of room to work safely.

We’ll share additional information as it becomes available.

With school back in session, the Belgrade Police Department has received numerous complaints about drivers failing to stop for school buses with red lights flashing and stop arms extended.

Montana law requires drivers approaching from either direction to stop approximately 30 feet from the bus and remain stopped until the red lights are no longer flashing.

Failing to stop carries serious consequences. A first offense can result in a $500 to $1,000 fine, 50 to 100 hours of community service, or both. Penalties increase significantly for subsequent offenses.

But this is more than a traffic rule. Children are getting on and off these buses and may be crossing the road. Please slow down, stay alert, and be patient. A few extra moments can help keep our kids safe.

We’ve received reports of a bear making its way around Belgrade today. Our officers are aware and have been in contact with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks.

In the meantime, if you spot a bear, please keep your distance and give it plenty of space. Despite being oh so adorable, bears are wild animals and should never be approached or fed.

This is also a great reminder to secure your trash, bring pet food inside, clean up outdoor grills, and remove anything else that might look or smell like an easy meal.

If you see the bear, admire it from a safe distance and let it go about its bear business.
