Mensaje Del Jefe Policiaco Fairfield

Respetuosamente,

Jefe Policiaco Scott Fairfield

Message From Chief Fairfield

I almost always refrain from commenting on police use of force issues until all the facts are known. However, after watching nearly an hour of video, I am compelled to speak up and express my thoughts and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Tyre Nichols.

Let me start by saying there is no excuse or logical explanation for what happened to Mr. Nichols. As the video played, I found myself looking away, shaking my head, and in some cases tearing up as I watched what appeared to be five heartless and untrained police officers take the life of another human being.

In my 30-plus years in this profession, I have never witnessed anything close to what I saw in today’s video.

The authority to use force is a tremendous responsibility, and the use of force is sometimes necessary to protect the public and to save lives. However, that authority comes with an even greater responsibility to ensure that we use that force humanely and in a manner consistent with the law.

The actions of those five officers do not reflect the brave men and women who serve the city of Bell Gardens or the other 99% of officers in this country who hold the law enforcement profession and human life in high regard.

The Nichols family is undoubtedly experiencing unimaginable pain. Please keep them and the Memphis community in your prayers during this difficult time.

As we move forward, the men and women of the Bell Gardens Police Department will remain committed to preserving human life while holding ourselves to the highest standards.

I am grateful to our City Manager and City Council for their commitment to providing the necessary resources to train our personnel, so they have the tools and skills needed to do their job professionally and safely.

As Chief of Police of the Bell Gardens Police Department and a proud member of the law enforcement profession, I will continue to provide the best possible training to our people while insisting that they remain steadfast in their commitment to honorably serve others.

Respectfully,
Chief Scott Fairfield
