Driving to work this morning, I had an idea. I am not sure if it’s an original or if I just “remembered” it today or what. But it struck like lightning today, and so I tried it, and 🤯🤯🤯

So, I start every class period with 10 minutes of silent reading. It’s our “do now.” I circle around and chat with kids about their books or help kids select a new one to read. There is nothing formal about this. It’s just easy, low-stakes practice.

Of course though, I have lots of kids who struggle with even 10 minutes. They hate to read and are often pretty behind their peers. Silent reading comprehension is BY FAR their biggest struggle. They rarely finish a book bc they “get bored” which translates into “the book wasn’t sticking in my brain.”

So today, I gave everyone a large Post-It. I told them they needed to write 10 words/phrases inspired by their reading today. No complete sentences, no summaries, no text evidence. Just words/phrases. I said they could go over 10 but not under.

After 10 minutes, they had to explain to a neighbor one of the words on their Post-It. Then, they put the Post-It on the page where they left off, put their books away, and I taught the lesson for the day.

I stopped one minute early and told the kids to take out a piece of scratch paper and write down as many words/phrases from their Post-It that they remember.

Every single kid could remember at least 5. Some could do all 10.

Now tomorrow, they have their Post-It in the book and can use that as a jumping off point for their reading!! And we will complete the process all over again.
