Eastbank Plaquemines Community Update: Railroad Safety Concerns
I have been working for over a year on safety concerns about train signals and extended blocked crossings on the Eastbank. I recently reached out to Senator Patrick Connick, Chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee, and he has been a huge help in moving this forward. We sincerely thank Senator Connick for his immediate response and dedicated support!
Senator Connick connected us directly with a Norfolk Southern representative, who provided the proper procedure for resolving these safety hazards:
-Check the attached photos of the blue signs located at each railroad crossing for the emergency contact number and the specific DOT crossing location number.
-Call the 1- 800 number: Call the toll-free emergency number on the blue sign, or call Norfolk Southern directly at 1 800 453 2530 or 1 800 946 4744. Be sure to provide the crossing location number shown on the sign.
-24 Hour Response: Once a signal maintenance issue is reported, the field team is required to be on site to inspect or fix the lights within 24 hours.
-Corporate Monitoring: Norfolk Southern Rail Headquarters actively tracks all reported calls to ensure local maintenance teams carry out required fixes promptly.
I will be in contact with Norfolk Southern on a monthly basis to review issues and monitor progress. If the maintenance team is not being responsive to your calls, please contact me directly at [email protected].
Reporting every issue creates an official paper trail and ensures repairs are prioritized. Thank you for helping keep our community safe.
