At 0320, the Northwest Fire District and several automatic/mutual aid departments responded to assist Signal Hill Fire Dept. with a commercial structure fire. Initial reports was a large commercial building with fire through the roof. Arriving units found a large commercial business that was occupied with fire through the roof and occupants evacuating. Chief 4200, ladder 4229, and engine 4213 responded to the scene. Chief 4200 arrived on scene and was assigned fire ground operations. Ladder 4229 arrived on scene and put its aerial waterway in to service to begin extinguishment and exposure protection. Engine 4213 arrived on scene and supplied water from their booster tank until the arrival of tankers. Due to the area not having any fire hydrants, several tankers were used to supply Ladder 4229 for several hours. The fire was declared under control this morning but crews remained on scene throughout the day and into the evening to assist with extinguishing hot spots, cleanup, and the investigation. At this time, the cause of the fire is under investigation and being investigated by local authorities and the Illinois State Fire Marshal.

While assisting Signal Hill Fire Dept, the Northwest Fire District had one fire alarm in district which was covered by Freeburg Fire Dept. who was covering for Signal Hill. We would like to thank Freeburg Fire Dept for their assistance.

Lastly, thank you to Swansea Fire Dept who provided coverage for us after we initially arrived on scene to assist Signal Hill.

At 20:29 this evening, the Northwest Fire District with automatic aid of Swansea Fire Dept, East Side Fire Dept, Villa Hills Fire Dept, and O’Fallon Fire Dept responded for a residential structure fire. Chief 4200 arrived on scene to a fully involved single wide modular home. Engine 4213 arrived on scene and quickly deployed multiple hand lines to begin fire attack and protecting exposures. Various other fire units from Northwest and automatic aid departments began arriving on scene to assist with fire attack, water supply, search, and overhaul. Due to the area lacking fire hydrants, the fire departments listed above brought specialized apparatus called tankers to the scene. These apparatus carry large amounts of water and are used in situations where there are no positive water sources like fire hydrants. The fire has been declared under control and units are finishing up overhaul. All mutual aid departments have been released from the scene while Northwest units remains on scene for a little bit longer. Thankfully, there were no injuries to bystanders or fire personnel. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

As always, we would like to thank all our automatic aid departments that assisted us on scene.

Thank you to Abbott EMS for providing an ambulance on scene to assist with firefighter rehab.

Lastly, thank you to Signal Hill Fire Dept for providing coverage for us while we operated at the structure fire.

It is with great sadness, the Northwest St. Clair County Fire Protection District announces the passing of retired firefighter Elmer Neff. Elmer Neff joined in 1970, at the time it was called Northwest Volunteer Fire Dept. Elmer was essential in the merger of the all the districts that now make up the Northwest Fire Protection District. Elmer retired in 1991 from the Northwest Fire Protection District. Though he retired, Elmer continued to stay active with the fire district and the fire association. Thank you for all your years of service to the fire district and the association. You will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends.
