This week the City of Bellevue, Washington proclaimed October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), and members of our Evergreen Transition Program (ETP) were present to accept the proclamation. 🎉

ETP supports our young adult students with disabilities through employment, volunteer experiences, community-based instruction and partnerships to create meaningful access to employment, learning, recreation, relationships, and civic life. These students have opportunities thanks to community partners including AtWork! offices, Bellden Cafe, Bellevue Botanical Garden, Bellevue Youth Theatre , Department of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), Hopelink, Issaquah Salmon Hatchery, Jubilee REACH, KidsQuest Children's Museum, Kindering, Overlake Medical Center, Renewal Food Bank, Seattle Humane Society, and Silver Glen Senior Cooperative.

ETP is a powerful example of our district’s commitment to belonging by ensuring that every person is seen, valued, and provided meaningful opportunities to participate, contribute, and thrive within our beloved Bellevue community!

Follow Evergreen Transition Program on social media and visit bsd405.org to learn more! If you know any local businesses that would like to partner with ETP for jobsite training, please reach out!

This week marks National School Bus Safety Week, a time for families, students, teachers and school bus operators to address the importance of school bus safety. To keep our students safe, drivers are reminded to slow down around school buses, and follow state laws regarding stopping and waiting when school bus stop arms are out and the red lights are flashing.

🚌 You can learn more about staying safe when riding our school buses on our Transportation team's School Bus Safety Resources page: https://www.bsd405.org/programs-and-services/transportation/school-bus-safety. Thank you for doing your part in keeping our BSD community safe!

We're celebrating student success in Washington state! 🎉 Shoutout to Srihith C. from Bellevue High School for being named a 2026 Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes national winner!

Every year, the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes recognizes young leaders who make a positive impact on people, their communities and the environment. Srihith earned this national honor for developing MConAI, a low-cost multilingual AI system for early Alzheimer's screening. His work has the potential to enable early Alzheimer's screening worldwide, especially in low-resource communities!

Congratulations, Srihith! 🎉Srihith's achievement reflects our district's commitment to empowering students with knowledge, skills and opportunities to drive meaningful change for our future world.

As we continue Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to give a special shoutout to Highland Middle School’s Abraham Luna, the recipient of this year’s first TEACH Award! đŸŽ‰đŸŽ”

As the founder of Highland’s mariachi program, Mr. Luna has created opportunities for students to celebrate culture, build community, and develop a lifelong love of music. You’ve likely seen Mariachi Águilas performing at BSD events, including our most recent Board meeting.

Many of his students go on to participate in mariachi at the high school level, and Mr. Luna is expanding access through Mariachi Bella Vista, a pilot program for students whose schools don't currently offer mariachi.

Hear more from Mr. Luna and his students in our Voices of Bellevue podcast episode, where they discuss the affirming impact of mariachi.

We’re working together to keep our BSD community safe and healthy! As part of our Health Services Team’s efforts to help students meet Washington’s immunization requirements, International Community Health Services (ICHS) is taking their health services on the go with their mobile health clinic! Last week they stopped by Odle Middle School for a vaccine clinic, and they are scheduled to serve other BSD schools throughout the year!

ICHS provides a full range of health care throughout King County and even has a dedicated location in our Highland Health Center! Thank you, ICHS, for all you do to support the health and well-being of our Bellevue community!

Reminder: Students who do not meet state vaccination requirements, and do not have an approved exemption on file, will be excluded from school beginning December 1, 2026, until requirements are met.

And don’t forget, there are three more community-wide flu and COVID vaccine clinics through Seattle Visiting Nurse Association taking place on October 15, October 16, and October 22, by appointment only.
