BPD sends Unclaimed and Seized Property (RCW 63.32.010) to the Bellingham Public Auto Auction. There is an online 'miscellaneous items' auction the first week of every month. Items turned over to Bellingham Public Auction include vehicles, tools, equipment, and other Bellingham Police Department surplus items.

As we mentioned a few weeks ago, one of the items purchased with the recent grant award is the pursuit ending/intervention technology called the Grappler Police Bumper by Stock Enterprises, LLC. We have several patrol vehicles outfitted with the new bumper and have put officers through training to certify them in the use of the Grappler Police Bumper. Well, we had our first this week.

On October 19th, Whatcom County Sheriff's Office deputies attempted a traffic stop on a black Kia. The driver failed to yield and fled, committing several traffic related crimes to include reckless driving and eluding. The pursuit was momentarily terminated and Washington State Patrol re-located the fleeing Kia and requested assistance from BPD officers.

The Kia driver had been driving into oncoming traffic, swerving and running red lights, endangering other road users and was about to enter I5 South at Sunset. One of our Grappler Police Bumper trained officers got to the scene, behind the Kia and deployed the device, stopping the fleeing Kia in its tracks - literally!

Not only was it our first deployment, we got to use it to help Whatcom County Sheriff's Office deputies and Washington State Patrol troopers! Great teamwork by the three agencies to stop this dangerous driver.

The driver was arrested and booked for a litany of crimes including eluding, felony DUI, possession of controlled substance, possession of a stolen vehicle (Kia was stolen,) driving while license suspended 2nd degree, and warrants from Mount Vernon and Skagit County.

Street closure alert:

Today at 1:28 p.m. there was a single car rollover crash at the corner of Ellis and Gladstone Streets. The driver sheared a power pole off at the base. While the power pole is still upright, it is unstable. PSE is enroute to work on stabilization, repair, and power restoration.

This process will take several hours. We have listed the street closures below and they are depicted on the map:

Ellis St - closed from York St to Potter St.
E. Champion - closed at Ellis
Gladstone St - closed from Ellis to Franklin Sts.

Whatcom Transportation Authority - WTA has detours already planned around the street closure. The driver was transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center for treatment.

Please stay out of the area until PSE alerts us the streets are back open.

Sending a drone as a first responder to 911 calls quickly gets officers critical information about what’s happening at the scene and helps us send the right response for the situation. It keeps everyone safer:
- the community and people at the scene, because we get more accurate information and, in some cases, begin to de-escalate before officers arrive,
- and responding officers, because they are not going into a situation blind.

In October we wear pink badges and patches for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is much more than going pink, though.

🩷 It is about strength, resilience, and hope.
🩷 It is to show support for those who are fighting cancer right now, celebrate those who are survivors and honor those we have lost.
🩷 It is a reminder to prioritize your health and schedule your screening. Early detection saves lives.

October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

💜 It is also about strength, resilience, and hope.

Talk to any officer who has spent time on Bike Patrol, and you’ll probably hear the same thing: there’s something special about being a bike officer.

In this video, Officers Terry and Thompson take us behind the scenes to share why they chose Bike Patrol, what they love most about the job, and how being on two wheels helps them connect with our Bellingham community.
