Operating a sewer utility in the Lake Whatcom Watershed, the District understands it is critical that our infrastructure and employees are prepared to ensure continuity of service no matter what Mother Nature throws our way. Today, like we do each fall, our Operations and Engineering staff spent time completing a comprehensive review of our wet weather response protocol—including in the field—to confirm procedures so that we may mitigate the potential for a sewage release in the event of a large storm event.

Don't be alarmed tomorrow when you hear the alarms - it's the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills in action!

Every October 15 at 10:15 a.m., millions of people around the Globe participate in the Great ShakeOut by running through earthquake drills and safety education. In Bellingham, this means you're likely to hear the tsunami warning sirens, as well as possibly hearing practice amergency alerts on nearby phones or other devices.

In September/October bills, customers can find a bill insert with information about upcoming changes to the District's rate structure affecting the tiers for water consumption over the base rate.

Changes will not take effect until 2027, and most customers will not see a large change to their bill. For more information, examples of how bills will compare, and background on why and how rates are set, please visit our website here: https://lwwsd.org/billing/2027-rate-structure-changes/

In the next couple of months, you'll notice some changes in the voices answering our phones. The bad news is, you won't get to talk to our extraordinary customer service queen, Trish, as often. Don't worry though, she's still going to be around! With the retirement of our current AP/Payroll and Benefits person, Trish is movin' on up to take over that role! 🎉

The other good news is, this means a fantastic open position available now! That's right - we're hiring! The Accounts Receivable Technician is responsible for preparing and processing monthly utility billing, maintaining customer accounts, receiving and posting payments, responding to billing questions and other customer concerns, coordinating work orders for field staff, and assisting with meter reading and development/utility connection activities. We're excited to announce that a champion is in our midst! District Maintenance Worker Greg Soto returned to the American Public Works Association's annual Public Works Expo this week to once again compete in the National Roadeo! And this time, he's bringing home the title!

Greg won the 2026 National Roadeo Title for Overall Backhoe and Mini-Excavator Operation! For press release and more details, visit our website at the link below. The competition is for fun, but it's also a stunning example of the skill required to do many of the jobs that public works employees do every day.
