From routine care to unexpected moments, our health services team works tirelessly behind the scenes so every student can succeed.

Our health services team was ready to welcome Dr. Harvill when we arrived at Meridian Middle School with his very own stethoscope, team uniform and even a nurse's cap (not pictured)!

During our visit, we spent time with Health Services Assistant Brenda Aamot and School Nurse Susan Peterson, who work hand in hand to support students’ health and well-being at school.

Their work goes far beyond what many people realize. From tracking carbohydrate content in school meals and managing severe allergies to administering medications and supporting students with chronic health conditions, they help ensure students have the care they need throughout the school day.

For students with diabetes, the team can respond to blood glucose monitoring alerts and follow individual care plans when a student needs help. They also help students access necessary health support and prescribed medications on field trips and teach students to manage their health conditions more independently.

Their care extends beyond medical needs, too. Brenda shared that she prepares hygiene kits when students need them and keeps extra clothing available, including items that can be especially helpful for students navigating puberty.

But what stood out most was just how much they care.

Susan shared how technology has made tracking health information easier and more accurate. When asked what happens if they receive an alert that a student’s blood glucose is low, their response said it all: They won't just walk to help a student, they'll run!

We witnessed firsthand the compassion and attentiveness they bring to their work every day.

Students need to be healthy and supported to learn and thrive. Our health services team plays an essential role in making that possible, often in ways the rest of us may never see.

Thank you, Brenda, Susan, and our entire health services team, for all you do for our students. Your work is a powerful example of what it means to live out our commitment to One Team. One Purpose.

MHS seniors and families are invited to the Financial Aid Night, from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 28 at Meridian High School. Futures NW experts will help families navigate the process.

There is no cost to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Students should use the official Federal Student Aid website and be cautious of websites or services charging a fee to complete the application. Families who are not eligible to complete the FAFSA may want to explore the WASFA (Washington Application for State Financial Aid).

On a rainy Friday afternoon, Dr. Harvill joined bus driver John Crawford for a ride home from Irene Reither Elementary and it didn't take long to see the positive impact he has on students.

John greets students by name, checks in with families at bus stops, and keeps the ride running smoothly with a "magic word" chosen by students each year. This year's word is "banana." It's a small tradition that gives students a sense of ownership and helps create a positive culture on the bus. When students hear him say “banana” they know they need to listen.

Along the route, we observed the unique challenges of being a bus driver. As a teacher, students are in front of you. As a paraeducator, they're beside you. As a bus driver, they're sitting behind you while you navigate traffic and stay focused on the road.

We saw firsthand how intentional John is about building relationships, creating a positive bus environment, managing behavior, and keeping students safe. He is constantly alert, balancing the needs of the students on board with the responsibility of getting everyone to and from school safely.

With everything happening inside and outside the bus, drivers like John still make sure students arrive safely and on time each day.

Thank you for showing us how One Team. One Purpose. comes to life every day!

Meridian High School students enjoyed a new lunch last Friday! Walking Tacos!

This featured lunch included whole-grain reduced-fat Doritos topped with 3 oz of beef taco meat. Students customized their Walking Tacos with lettuce, refried beans, salsa, black olives, cheese and sour cream! Meals always include fruit and vegetables and choice of milk. This meal meets Nation School Lunch Program guidelines.

The verdict? An all-time record of 192 lunches served (way above our 145 average)! Big thanks to our Food Services team for bringing creative options to our students!

Dr. Harvill recently had the opportunity to spend time with kindergarten students in Angel Lammie’s class at Irene Reither Elementary School.

The visit started with students asking the tough questions: Do you have a wife? (Yes, for 27 years.) What's your favorite color? (Blue.) Do you have any puppies? (Yes, and one has only three legs.) They also wanted to know what he does for fun. Dr. Harvill shared a photo of one of his daughters with a fish she had caught, which was a big hit with the class!

Then it was story time. Dr. Harvill shared that he hadn't read a book to young children since his daughters were little, but he dove right in with funny voices, expressive reading, and plenty of enthusiasm.

This visit was part of Dr. Harvill's ongoing effort to learn more about the many roles that contribute to student success throughout our schools. As he spends time alongside staff and students, he continues to see firsthand how every member of our team plays an important role in creating positive learning experiences.

He was especially impressed by how well the kindergarten students listened to instructions, stayed engaged in their learning, and supported one another throughout the day.

We also asked Mrs. Lammie what she loves most about teaching kindergarten:

"There’s so much I love about this job, especially teaching kindergarten! Kindergarten has so many big moments of immense growth. But, what I really love are the little moments between those big ones: the random hugs, the hilarious things they say, the skipping down the hallway, the proud little smiles when they think no one is looking, and learning each of their unique personalities. Teaching kindergarten is truly a front row seat to the best kind of chaos and joy!"

Thank you, Mrs. Lammie and your kindergarten students, for welcoming us into your classroom. Experiences like these remind us that we are One Team, One Purpose, working together every day to support students!

This week our first graders at MP3 enjoyed a special visit from North Whatcom Fire and Rescue - WCFD 21. Students learned about fire safety and explored the equipment and protective gear firefighters use every day. They asked thoughtful questions and shared what they had already learned about fire safety in class. The excitement continued as students toured a fire engine and an ambulance, and even had the opportunity to use a fire hose!

It was a fun-filled visit with lots of smiles, hands-on learning, and memorable experiences. Thank you to North Whatcom Fire and Rescue for taking the time to visit our students and help teach these important safety lessons. We appreciate your partnership and dedication to our community!
