In the 1970 Western Monte Walsh, the ranch boss stomps into the bunkhouse after a wild fight and demands to know what happened. The crew’s instant response? Everyone "plumb forgot."

That bunkhouse isn't much different from a modern company break room.

The break room is the crew’s sanctuary—a place to vent, blow off steam, and drop rank. The moment a boss steps into that space unannounced, the employee code of silence kicks in.

Leadership lesson: The break room is employee territory. If a manager barges into their sanctuary demanding answers, all they're going to get is a room full of people who "plumb forgot."

The Mescal Movie Set was used extensively in the movie and this scene was filmed at the historic Empire Ranch.

Arizona is home to many of our favorite classic Westerns and the iconic Mescal Movie Set is still an active set. When the cameras aren't rolling, we keep the history alive by welcoming visitors for Historical Film Tours. Check out our tour and film schedule at www.MescalMovieSet.com.

Happy Birthday, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson - (October 9)

Best known to Western fans as Mattie Earp in the classic film Tombstone, the talented actress brought depth to a complex historical figure.

In the movie, Mattie’s struggles are tied to laudanum—a common 19th-century household staple used for everything from pain relief to sedatives. While widely used, it was essentially a potent and highly addictive 10% o***m tincture in alcohol.

Following her life in Tombstone and Wyatt's departure with Josephine, Mattie's later years were difficult. On July 3, 1888, she passed away from a lethal dose of laudanum in Pinal City, Arizona, at just 38 years old, and was laid to rest in the local cemetery.

Join us in wishing Dana Wheeler - Nicholson a very happy birthday today!

Happy Birthday to Peter Sherayko -- Oct. 8th

Best known for portraying Texas Jack Vermillion in the 1993 film "Tombstone," Peter is an accomplished actor, producer, and Western historian.

Beyond his iconic role on screen, Peter served as a technical advisor and led a team of Western specialists known as The Buckaroos, supplying historically accurate horses, fi****ms, and equipment for the production. His extensive film credits also include "Bone Tomahawk" and "A Soldier's Revenge."

As the founder of Caravan West Productions, Peter provides authentic props, wardrobe, fi****ms, and livestock to the industry. He is a true Mescal favorite, and we are always thrilled to welcome him back to the set to share his expertise in period-correct gear and frontier history.

"Monte Walsh" -- released Oct. 7, 1970
In this scene, two aging cowboys -- Monte Walsh and Chet Rollins -- discuss the end of the cowboy era.

Every generation faces a time when the world around them changes. Monte and Chet's world was changing, and they had to face an uncomfortable reality:
Nobody gets to be a cowboy for ever.

The same lesson applies today. Our technology may be different, but the challenge remains the same: Adapt to change, learn new skills, and find where you can create value in the world that's coming.

The Mescal Movie Set was used extensively in the movie and this scene was filmed at the historic Empire Ranch.

Where legends began: Taking it back to 1969 and the construction of the iconic Mescal Movie Set for "Monte Walsh."

In 1969, a grassy knoll in Benson, Arizona gave way to cinematic history with the construction of the Mescal Movie Set for the classic Western "Monte Walsh." Built to authentic Old West specifications, these dirt roads and boardwalks laid the
foundation for decades of legendary storytelling. The start of cameras rolling on some of Hollywood's greatest moments.

"Monte Walsh," starring Lee Marvin and Jack Palance was released 56 years ago on October 7, 1970.

A big thanks to actor/stuntman/stunt coordinator Rod Wolfe for sharing the article with the set!

The Mescal Movie Set is still available for filming and offers Historical Film Tours between productions. For more information visit www.MescalMovieSet.com.
