Benton County Fire District 4 and Benton County Fire Protection District 2, would like to thank; our local mutual aid agencies, Washington State Fire Mobilization, all of the resources from across the state of Washington that responded and the SE WA Incident Management Team for their support during the Second Street Fire.

This fire began Friday afternoon and was wind driven. It grew quickly and was difficult to manage because of its location. Life and property were our primary objectives during initial attack, ensuring no injuries or deaths occurred. We are grateful for the support of our local community. With heavy fire traffic, road closures, and the closure of our local park, your understanding and patience has been greatly appreciated and made the overall fire response efforts easier.

As the weekend comes to a close, all roadways are now open, and all evacuation levels have been lifted. Effective Sunday, September 27, 2026, at 6:00 pm, the fire has been turned back to our local fire districts. We will continue to monitor the fire and work on any remaining hot spots. The Benton County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation and will publish it once it is complete.

We anticipate visibility of a few smoke columns in the fire area over the next few days. If you see large columns of smoke outside of the fire area, please call 911. We are aware of the haystack smoldering out by the racetrack. We expect it will continue to burn and smolder for many days, but we are working with the property to manage and to mitigate the issue.

If you have questions about the fire, please contact us during business hours via our website, email or business phone line. Stay safe, stay vigilant, and again, thank you for your ongoing support.

🚨 Statewide Burn Ban Now in Effect 🚨

Governor Bob Ferguson has declared a statewide wildfire emergency due to extreme fire conditions across Washington. Effective immediately through September 30, 2026, most outdoor burning is prohibited statewide.

🔥 The burn ban includes:
• Yard debris burning
• Trash burning
• Land clearing burns
• W**d abatement burns
• Bonfires
• Campfires not contained in approved fire rings or fire pits

✅ Still allowed (where local restrictions permit):
• Propane and gas grills or stoves used over nonflammable surfaces and at least 5 feet from vegetation
• Campfires in approved fire rings or fire pits at designated campgrounds and on private property, unless prohibited by more restrictive local rules

⚠️ Remember: Local burn bans may be more restrictive than the Governor's order. Always check local regulations before burning.

Our region remains under Extreme Fire Danger, and today's weather conditions create the potential for rapid fire growth. A single spark can have devastating consequences.

Please help protect our firefighters, your neighbors, and our community by avoiding activities that could start a wildfire. Together, we can help prevent the next wildfire.

As of today, Aug. 1, 2026, the entire state of Washington is under a burn ban.

This is not an effort to curtail your rights.
This is not an attempt to unalive the joy that comes from roasting marshmallows.

It is very simply an effort to preserve lives and property in the midst of a drought > dry vegetation > winds acting like a toddler after three juice boxes.

What should you do?
1. Don't burn stuff. Sometimes we just have to state the obvious.
2. Sign up for Code Red for Benton or Franklin County. Link in the comments.
3. Assume that you're under a Level 1 "Get Ready" evacuation advisory, ESPECIALLY if you live within a half mile of wildland area. That means monitor local news and emergency alerts, pack what you would need for at least several hours (medication, important documents), and check on your neighbors to find out if they are home and would need assistance in the event of an evacuation. Identify at least two ways out of your neighborhood.
4. If there is a fire, please stay out of the way. You are not a moth. You can resist the urge to jump in your car and drive toward the flames. Lookie-loo traffic makes it more dangerous for evacuees, more dangerous for police and deputies attempting to get to homes to evacuate residents, and more dangerous for firefighters trying to maneuver personnel and equipment to the fire and fill up and deliver water tankers.

Please also avoid activities that could create a spark. This includes things like target shooting, discharging fireworks, off-roading, dragging chains, burning yard debris/weeds, and even mowing down a dry field. That ship has sailed at this point. Hit a rock and 💥 we're off to the races. And not in a good way.

Thank you for taking this seriously.
