Exploring How The Imagination Library Impacts Communities:
The Imagination Library began with Dolly Parton’s desire that every child, regardless of income, would have access to books. Since its founding, The Dollywood Foundation has conducted and encouraged research on the Imagination Library program in an effort to assess communities’ reactions to the program and its impact on children literacy. The majority of this research has been implemented at the local community level, by program staff or local researchers, to provide formative and summative feed back to support local Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (DPIL) implementations. The Dollywood Foundation initiated a review of over 20 years of research conducted on Imagination Library programs in the U.S. The findings from the body of DPIL research indicate the program is extremely popular in the communities where its implemented and shows promise in promoting changes in home literacy environments, children’s attitudes toward reading, and early literacy skills. Positive Perceptions

Participating family members were overwhelmingly positive about the program and its impact on their children when asked in questionnaires, interviews and focus groups. Community members, including Imagination Library partners and preschool and kindergarten teachers, also had positive views of the program and its impact on book ownership and literacy practices in homes. The positive views of the program and its impacts were present regardless of the demographic characteristics of the community or its participants, and longer program participation often resulted in more positive outcomes. Improving Attitudes & Skills
Parents believed their children were more interested in reading due to receiving the books each month. Participating children were excited when their Imagination Library books arrived in the mail monthly, addressed specifically to the child. Some studies found Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library had promise with respect to developing children’s early literacy skills, as participants had more advanced skills than their classmates who did not participate in the program. 🦋 The Light of Dolly Will Never Go Out 📚

We were lucky to have her. We miss you already, Dolly.

We know we're a couple days behind the rest of the world on this one — but some goodbyes you sit with a while before you can find the words. Today we say farewell to a woman who taught the whole world that love can be stitched together, patch by patch, into something beautiful. Dolly Parton has passed on — but her light will never go out.

I still remember being a little girl, sitting in front of the TV watching *9 to 5*. I didn't have the words for it yet, but I knew I wanted to be like the women on that screen — women who stood tall, spoke up, and ran the show. Dolly showed me that you could be soft and steel at the same time, all sparkle and all backbone. Years later, when I helped build a nonprofit of my own, I realized that little girl had been taking notes the whole time. Dolly helped make me a boss lady, and she never even knew my name.

But here's the thing that stays with me most. Dolly built a lot in her life — the records, the movies, the theme park. And yet she said that before he passed, her own daddy told her the Imagination Library was probably the most important thing she had ever done. She built it as a tribute to him, a man who never learned to read or write. Of everything she gave the world, *that* was the one she held closest.

I understand that now in my own small way. Back when we were rooted in Western Kentucky, our little nonprofit was proud to serve as a local affiliate — putting a free book in a child's hands every single month. Standing up and bringing Dolly's Imagination Library to that community remains one of the funnest things I have ever done.

Long before Dolly became a household name, she made a simple promise: that no child in her hometown would grow up without books of their own. That promise grew into a program that has since put more than 300 million free books into little hands all over the world.

Like the coat in her most beloved song, Dolly's legacy is made of many colors, sewn together with love, memory, and a whole lot of heart. But a quilt like that is never really finished. It only keeps growing when someone new picks up the needle.

So today, in her honor, we're calling on the passionate folks in every community to pick up where the rest of us are standing:

- **Start a local Imagination Library chapter** where you live, or
- **Donate at www.imaginationlibrary.com ** — the same place her own family asked folks to give.

Dolly lit a fire that no one person could ever carry alone. She handed it to all of us. Now it's our turn to keep it burning — one book, one child, one community at a time.

The light doesn't go out. It gets passed from hand to hand. Her light burns on in every story read aloud, in every sleepy child turning a page, and in every little girl who learns from Dolly that she's allowed to be bold. 🕯️

We were lucky to have her. We miss you already. 💛📚🦋
