Come join the Paper Hug Project to make heartfelt cards to brighten someone's day!

Saturday, October 24
1:00 - 3:00 pm
Bentonville Public Library

A simple note can be a powerful reminder: you are seen, you are loved, and you are not alone. With the help of events and community volunteers—children, teens, adults, and families—we deliver heartfelt cards to nursing home residents who may be experiencing loneliness or isolation. Each card is a paper hug—small, thoughtful, and full of love.

Paper Hugs Project was created to bring warmth, connection, and joy to residents of local nursing homes in NWA through handwritten cards.

Get ready for the ultimate battle where families of creative amateur artisans will compete against each other for the crown of Bentonville's Best Family Crafters! Imagine the show "Chopped" combined with "The Great British Bake Off"....minus the food!

Saturday, October 31
1:00 - 3:00 pm
Family registration required. (Link in profile.)

Here is how it will work:

Six family premium spots are open for registration to artisans. To qualify as a family entry, at least two people must compete in that family group. Only one family member needs to register on behalf of the family for the event, but bring as many family members as you want to help!

Each family will be provided a crate of identical "spooky" crafting supplies that can be made into the funkiest, most unique craft you can conjure during the slotted time in the Makerspace. Each family can also use basic supplies from the Makerspace such as glue, scissors, hair dryers, etc., but will not know the contents of each crate until the competition begins (because that makes it more fun!)

A family winner will be crowned at the end of the event and their winning craft will be on display in the library for everyone to enjoy! Let the "spooky" games begin!

Special thanks to the Friends of the Bentonville Library for their support of this program!

The City of Bentonville is accepting applications for Bentonville residents to serve on the Library Advisory Board. This committee serves in an advisory capacity to city staff, mayor, city council, and the Library Director for a five-year term that will begin in January.

The Library Advisory Board concentrates on matters related to the Bentonville Public Library (BPL) facilities, services, and organization. Ideal candidates are long-term, public library patrons seeking to support the BPL mission to engage our community, encourage discovery, and promote literacy by offering lifelong learning opportunities. BPL especially seeks variety in representation of professions, age, familial status, and other background demographics. This is a volunteer position.

Bentonville residents with a passion for accessible information and literature and a desire to serve their community are encouraged to apply. Applicants must:
• Be a registered voter
• Reside within the corporate limits of Bentonville
• Be available to attend monthly meetings.

Currently, the board meets at 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month in the Rotary Conference Room at BPL or through video conferencing. Meeting days and times may follow a different schedule, starting early next year. Unless necessitated by Library business, no meetings are scheduled during July and August.

Members are encouraged to be available to represent the library at special events both on- and off-site, promote the library through community interactions both in person and online, and seek out organizational support.

Apply online BentonvilleLibrary.org/LibraryAdvisoryBoard (link in profile).

About the book:
It is the spring of 1939 and three generations of the Kurc family are doing their best to live normal lives, even as the shadow of war grows closer. The talk around the family Seder table is of new babies and budding romance, not of the increasing hardships threatening Jews in their hometown of Radom, Poland. But soon the horrors overtaking Europe will become inescapable and the Kurcs will be flung to the far corners of the world, each desperately trying to navigate his or her own path to safety.

As one sibling is forced into exile, another attempts to flee the continent, while others struggle to escape certain death, either by working grueling hours on empty stomachs in the factories of the ghetto or by hiding as gentiles in plain sight. Driven by an unwavering will to survive and by the fear that they may never see one another again, the Kurcs must rely on hope, ingenuity, and inner strength to persevere.

An extraordinary, propulsive novel, We Were the Lucky Ones demonstrates how in the face of the twentieth century's darkest moment, the human spirit can endure and even thrive.

About the book:

August, 1943. Fourteen-year-old Massimo is all alone. Newly orphaned and fleeing from Rome after surviving a bombing raid that killed his parents, Massimo is attacked by thugs and finds himself bloodied at the base of the Montecassino. It is there in the Benedictine abbey’s shadow that a charismatic and cryptic man calling himself Pietro Houdini, the self-proclaimed “Master Artist and confidante of the Vatican,” rescues Massimo and makes him an assistant in preserving the treasures that lay within the monastery walls.

But can Massimo believe what Pietro is saying, particularly when Massimo has secrets too? Who is this extraordinary man? When it becomes evident that Montecassino will soon become the front line in the war, Pietro Houdini and Massimo plan to smuggle three priceless Titian paintings to safety down the mountain. They are joined by a vivid cast of characters and together they will lie, cheat, steal, fight, kill, and sin their way through battlefields to survive, all while smuggling the Renaissance masterpieces and the bag full of ancient Greek gold they have rescued from the “safe keeping” of the Germans.
