It is with deep regret that the Berkeley Heights Fire Department announces the passing of former firefighter Dominick Yannotta.
Dominick proudly served the Berkeley Heights Fire Department during the 1970s, dedicating his time to serving and protecting the community he called home.
A lifelong resident of Berkeley Heights, Dominick also proudly served in the Army National Guard from 1968 to 1974 before receiving his honorable discharge. He worked for many years as a Marine Hydraulic Engineer with Cunningham Marine Hydraulics in Hoboken before later joining F.S. Supply Co. in Keyport, NJ.
The members of the Berkeley Heights Fire Department extend their deepest condolences to Dominick’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. We are grateful for his service to our community and our nation.

On Sunday, October 11th, the Berkeley Heights Fire Department (BHFD) responded to four incidents, including a rollover crash on Interstate 78 East near Exit 43.
With poor weather conditions associated with Post-Tropical Cyclone Isaias making driving more challenging, a vehicle crashed and overturned onto the center median. Fortunately, the driver was uninjured and was able to exit the vehicle without assistance. Modern vehicle safety features, combined with the driver wearing a seat belt, played an important role in helping protect the driver.
Other responses throughout the day included assisting the New Providence Volunteer Fire Department with a smoke investigation inside a residence, investigating a malfunctioning carbon monoxide alarm, and responding to an accidental fire alarm activation caused by someone blow-drying their hair.
BHFD reminds everyone to slow down, allow extra travel time, and use caution when driving in adverse weather conditions. Always wear your seat belt, and never drive faster than conditions safely allow.

🔥 On Wednesday, October 7th, B.H.F.D. responded to four incidents. One of the calls was a car fire at Drift Road and Plainfield Avenue in Watchung, where B.H.F.D. worked alongside the Watchung Volunteer Fire Department The two departments worked together to extinguish the fire and prevent approximately two gallons of motor oil and gasoline from entering the storm sewer. Two of the other incidents involved motor vehicle crashes on Interstate 78. Both crashes resulted in minor injuries. B.H.F.D. and the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad responded to both incidents and provided care to those involved. In addition to responding to emergencies, B.H.F.D. visited Union Village Montessori School in observance of Fire Prevention Week. Students learned about the importance of practicing fire drills at home with their families, recognizing potential fire hazards, and knowing how to safely exit a building during an emergency.

📢I OCTOBER IS FIRE PREVENTION MONTH!
October is a great time to take a few minutes to make sure you and your family are prepared before a fire happens.
🔥 Check your smoke alarms — Test them monthly and replace batteries as needed. Make sure there is a working smoke alarm on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas.
🍳 Cook safely — Never leave cooking unattended, and keep anything that can burn away from your stovetop.
🏠 Keep heating equipment safe — Keep space heaters and other heating equipment at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn.
🚭 Prevent fires before they start — Be careful with candles, smoking materials, grills, and anything involving an open flame.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Have a plan — Make sure everyone in your household knows two ways out of every room when possible, where to meet outside, and what to do when a smoke alarm sounds. Get out and stay out!
Most importantly, don’t wait for a fire to remind you about fire safety. A few minutes of prevention today can make all the difference tomorrow.

🔋 Fire Prevention Week: Charge Smart, Stay Safe 🔥
Fire Prevention Week runs October 4–10, making this a great time to check how and where you’re charging your devices. Lithium-ion batteries are found in many of the devices we use every day, and safe charging habits can help prevent battery fires.
➡️ A few simple habits can make a big difference. Learn more about safe charging and fire prevention at NFPA.org.
🔥 The History Behind Fire Prevention Week
📚 Fire Prevention Week grew out of one of America’s most devastating fires—the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871. The fire killed hundreds of people, left approximately 100,000 homeless, and destroyed more than 17,000 structures.
On the 40th anniversary of the fire in 1911, the Fire Marshals Association of North America began promoting Fire Prevention Day as a way to educate the public about fire safety and prevention.
In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first national Fire Prevention Day proclamation, calling for October 9 to be devoted to fire-prevention education.
The observance expanded to Fire Prevention Week in 1922, and in 1925 President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the first National Fire Prevention Week. Today, Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week in which October 9 falls and is recognized as the nation’s longest-running public health observance.
Many fire departments and schools continue fire-prevention education throughout the entire month of October with demonstrations, drills, open houses, and community safety programs.
Fire Prevention Month is a reminder that a little preparation and education can save lives
