Officials say yes to 274 units over downtown Berkeley Walgreens 02/02/2019

"More than 50 people, many of whom were young, diverse UC Berkeley students, pleaded with council not to prioritize a view over the housing that’s so sorely lacking in the city."

And the council voted 6-0-3 to affirm that! Thank you Mayor Arreguin and Councilmembers Kesarwani, Wengraf, Robinson, and Droste for standing for students and more housing Downtown!

Last night, the Zoning Adjustments Board voted 6-2 to approve almost 300 units of new housing Downtown!

Not only will this add over a thousand possible student beds at a transit and campus-accessible location, but the project developers have also committed to contributing over $10 million to Berkeley's Housing Trust Fund, which will go toward building housing for low, very low, and extremely low income families.

Thank you to Commissioners O’Keefe, Kahn, Clarke, Skjerping, Wrightland, and (fellow student!) Dohee Kim for standing up for more housing!

Council District 7 candidate Ces Rosales used a picture from our kick-off event as her Facebook cover photo and her flyers.

To be clear, this shouldn't be taken as an endorsement or her or any other candidate. We haven't endorsed anyone in D7 (or any race for that matter). The people in the picture (including candidates Rigel Robinson and Aidan Hill) have a variety of opinions about who the best choice to represent D7 is.

Last night, the Berkeley City Council voted 5-3 to overturn an illegal and unethical decision by the Landmarks Preservation Commission to landmark this view from the Campanile, which would have limited the construction of new market-rate and affordable housing downtown. Thank you to Mayor Jesse Arreguin and Councilmembers Linda Maio, Susan Wengraf, Kriss Worthington, and Lori Droste for standing with housing!

An awesome letter by awesome people! Thanks to the ASUC for putting their strong support behind the More Student Housing Now Resolution!

"Students are in dire need of affordable and accessible housing. Time and time again, students have condemned the severity of the student housing crisis in Berkeley and demanded results from city and university leadership. Time and time again, however, even proposed solutions have been bogged down in the bureaucratic process. We look forward to seeing the Planning Commission recognize the urgency that this moment requires and prioritize the various referrals from the council that they have received that would result in more student housing being developed as soon as possible."
