FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Coos County Sheriff’s Office Warns Public of Deputy Impersonation Scam
The Coos County Sheriff’s Office, along with other area law enforcement agencies, has recently become aware of a scam in which individuals are falsely representing themselves as Coos County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
In these incidents, the caller claims to be a law enforcement officer and tells the victim that they have missed a court date, failed to pay a fine, or have some other outstanding legal matter. The scammer then demands that the victim send or wire money in order to avoid arrest or additional legal proceedings.
The Coos County Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that legitimate law enforcement officers will not demand payment over the phone or require individuals to wire money, purchase gift cards, or use other unconventional payment methods to avoid arrest.
Residents should be particularly cautious if a caller:
Claims to be a deputy or other law enforcement officer and demands immediate payment.
Threatens arrest if money is not sent immediately.
Requests payment by wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, or other unusual methods.
Refuses to allow the caller to verify their identity or contact the agency directly.
Uses a caller ID or other information that appears to identify a legitimate law enforcement agency.
Scammers may use real names of law enforcement personnel, badge numbers, agency information, or other publicly available details to make their claims appear legitimate. Do not rely solely on caller ID or information provided by the caller to verify their identity.
If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, do not provide personal or financial information and do not send money. Instead, hang up and contact the Sheriff’s Office directly using a verified telephone number to determine whether the call was legitimate.
Anyone who believes they have been the victim of this type of scam is encouraged to report the incident to their local law enforcement agency and the appropriate financial institution if money or financial information was provided.
The Coos County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to share this information with family members, friends, and others who may be targeted by these scams.
Remember: If someone is demanding immediate payment and threatening you with arrest, stop and verify the information before taking any action.
