📚🔥 Public Service Announcement from Shawnee Heights Fire District 🔥📚

If you’re planning a bonfire at 2:00 AM, we’d like to offer a friendly reminder…

🚫 Please don’t burn illegal things.
📖 And especially… don’t burn literary classics. Good Night, Gorilla has done nothing to deserve that kind of ending. 🦍🌙

If you’re going to burn legal yard waste or other approved materials, please make sure:
✅ You have the required burn permit.
✅ Weather conditions are safe.
✅ Your fire is attended at all times.
✅ You have a way to extinguish it quickly if needed.

Remember, we’d much rather read about a gorilla sneaking out of the zoo than respond to a fire because someone decided it was “bonfire literature.”

Stay safe, burn responsibly, and if you’re unsure whether something is legal to burn, ask first.

This past weekend, Shawnee Heights Fire District crews responded to multiple emergencies where family members immediately began CPR before firefighters arrived. Their quick actions made a difference and helped save the lives of their loved ones.

These calls are a powerful reminder that our community is often the first link in the chain of survival. When CPR is started right away, it gives someone their best chance until emergency crews can take over.

Thank you to those who stepped up when it mattered most!!!

If you haven't learned CPR, consider taking a class. You never know when the person who needs your help could be someone you love. Together, we can build a safer, stronger community... one life-saving skill at a time.

For more information on how you can take CPR classes contact The American Red Cross or The American Heart Association.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

At approximately 4:30 p.m. this afternoon, Shawnee Heights Fire District was dispatched to the 3900 block of SE Shawnee Heights Road for a reported structure fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a large fully involved hay barn fire. Initial reports indicated that animals may have been trapped inside the structure; however, we are pleased to report that all animals were safely accounted for and no animals were injured.

Firefighters faced challenging conditions while battling the blaze due to the extreme heat and high humidity. One firefighter sustained minor injuries and was evaluated and treated at the scene by AMR personnel.

Shawnee Heights Fire District was assisted by mutual aid agencies, including Douglas County Consolidated Fire District No. 1, the Topeka Fire Department, and the 190th Air Refueling Wing Fire Department.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

We extend our appreciation to our mutual aid partners for their prompt response and assistance, as well as to the community for their continued support.

For further details, please contact Administration during regular business hours at 785-379-0566.

The celebration may be over, but the fire risk isn’t. Spent fireworks can retain enough heat to reignite hours later, causing trash can, dumpster, or even structure fires. Before placing used fireworks in the trash, completely soak them in a bucket of water—preferably overnight—then place them in a sealed plastic bag before disposal. This simple step can prevent an unnecessary fire and keep sanitation workers and your neighbors safe. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission also recommends soaking all spent and malfunctioning fireworks before disposal to help prevent trash fires.

Every year, fireworks start more than 30,000 fires across the United States. Many of these are outside fires involving trash, grass, and debris because fireworks can remain hot long after the show is over. Before throwing them away, soak all used fireworks in a bucket of water overnight to help prevent a preventable fire. Kansas State Fire Marshal Office

Good morning, Shawnee Heights family! Did you know that a sparkler burns at approximately 2,000°F? That's hot enough to melt some metals and cause a severe burn in just a second or two. Many of the fireworks injuries we see every year involve sparklers because they're often mistaken as being safe for children.

🚒 Sparkler Safety Tips:
🔥 Sparklers are not toys—always provide adult supervision.
🧤 Never hand a lit sparkler to a young child.
👥 Keep everyone at arm's length from someone holding a sparkler.
💧 Have a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby to extinguish used sparklers immediately.
🚫 Never throw or wave sparklers near people, vehicles, or dry grass.
✨ Consider using glow sticks or LED wands for young children—they're just as fun and much safer.

This Independence Day, let's celebrate America's 250th birthday with memories that last—not injuries that do. Enjoy the festivities, stay alert, and help keep your family and neighbors safe.

🇺🇸 From all of us at the Shawnee Heights Fire District, have a safe and Happy Fourth of July! 🚒🎆
