Today, the Berwick Fire Department remembers September 11, 2001 — a day that forever changed our nation.

Twenty-five years later, we remember the 2,977 innocent lives lost, the families who were forever changed, and the countless first responders who answered the call that morning.

We especially honor the 343 firefighters and 23 NYPD officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, running toward danger while others were running away.

Their courage, sacrifice, and commitment to serving others will never be forgotten.

From all of us at the Berwick Fire Department, we remember those we lost, we stand with the families who continue to carry their memory, and we honor the brotherhood of firefighters and first responders who showed the world what courage truly means.

🇺🇸 NEVER FORGET 🇺🇸

The members of the Berwick Fire Department would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Sanford Regional Technical Center Fire Science Program for their assistance during the large scrap metal fire on Thursday June 11th.

The students and Captain Harold Smith responded to the scene and provided valuable support with firefighting operations.

Their professionalism, willingness to assist, and dedication to the fire service were evident throughout the operation.

Opportunities like this provide invaluable real-world experience for the next generation of firefighters while demonstrating the importance of teamwork and mutual aid within the fire service community.

The Fire I & II program at Sanford Regional Technical Center provides students with invaluable hands-on training and real-world experience that prepares them for a future in the fire service. Through classroom instruction, practical skills training, and emergency response education, students develop the knowledge, discipline, and teamwork necessary to become successful firefighters and public servants.

This vocational program not only introduces students to firefighting techniques and emergency operations but also helps build leadership, responsibility, and confidence. The Fire I & II class serves as an important pathway for young men and women interested in serving their communities while helping local departments develop the next generation of firefighters.

Thank you to the Sanford Vocational Fire Science students and Captain Harold Smith for your hard work and commitment. We are grateful for your assistance and look forward to working together in the future.

John Lapierre Jr. Berwick, ME
Subject: Sincere Appreciation for Your Generosity

Dear Mr. Lapierre,

On behalf of the entire Berwick Fire Department who responded to the incident on June 11, 2026, we want to extend our deepest gratitude for your incredible kindness.

As you may know, our department was dispatched to Berwick Iron and Metal at approximately 6:00 AM for a massive scrap pile fire. With temperatures soaring into the upper 80s, firefighting units from across the region spent nearly 12 grueling hours battling the blaze, deploying engines, ladders, and multiple tank trucks to shuttle water and protect the town’s water supply.
By the time our crews finally brought the scene under control, packed up the equipment, and returned to the station, they were completely exhausted and drained from a long day in the blazing sun. Walking into the station to find that you had generously provided sandwiches, chips, and sodas for the department was an incredible morale booster and a deeply appreciated gesture.

Our firefighters put everything they have into protecting this community and knowing that citizens like you have our backs makes all the difference. Your thoughtfulness provided much-needed nourishment and reminded us why we are so proud to serve Berwick.

Thank you again for your generosity and support.
Sincerely,
Berwick Fire Department
