The Ironwood Public Safety Department and the Gogebic County Sheriff's Office recommend the following for parents allowing their children to trick or treat this year.

1.) Trick or Treat will be held on Saturday, October 31st, in all cities and
townships within Gogebic County. Recommended hours for Trick or Treating are between 4:00pm-7:00pm. Try to Trick or Treat during daylight hours.

2.) Children should wear light colored clothing or have reflective tape on their clothing so they can be easily seen. Also, carry a flashlight or wear a headlamp, if possible.

3.) Young children should be accompanied by a parent or adult.

4) Children should Trick or Treat only in their neighborhood, on well
lighted streets.

5.) Visit homes with porch lights on, which welcome Trick or Treating.

6.) When children Trick or Treat with friends, have them inform you of their route and when they plan to be back home.

7.) Parents should insist that treats be brought home for inspection
before anything is eaten. Fruit should be washed; unpacked items should be discarded. If any treat looks suspicious, contact
the Public Safety or the Sheriff's Office.

Remember that children look forward only to the good things about Halloween, therefore, parents should prepare and alert their children to the possible dangers too.

🔥 FOREST FIRE AWARENESS & SAFETY - Gogebic County 🔥

With fire danger levels currently VERY HIGH, the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in preventing wildfires. Residents and visitors are urged to use extreme caution with any outdoor activities that could cause a fire. Please follow all current burning restrictions, please try to avoid outdoor burning when conditions are unsafe.

Help protect our community, homes, and forests. Dry leaves, grass, and windy conditions can allow a small fire to spread quickly.

Please practice fire safety:
• Check current burn restrictions and permit requirements before burning.

• Avoid burning during dry or windy weather.
• Never leave a campfire or brush fire unattended.
• Keep water and a shovel nearby.
• Completely extinguish campfires: soak with water, stir, and soak again until everything is cool.
• Properly dispose of ci******es and other smoking materials. Never discard them onto the ground or from a moving vehicle.

IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING!

If you see a suspected forest fire, unexplained smoke coming from the woods, or an unattended fire, move to a safe location and call 911 immediately. Provide the location, nearby roads or landmarks, and what you observed. Do not approach the fire or put yourself at risk.

Early reporting helps firefighters respond quickly. Together, we can help keep Gogebic County safe.

Black River Fire : Crews and aircraft are responding to a wildfire south of Wakefield, MI just east of County Road 519.

You will see smoke in the area and aircraft dipping out of local lakes. Please use caution and obey all traffic controls.

If you fly, we can’t! No Drones in Fire Zones. Any aircraft or drone that flies near a fire shuts down operations and puts the safety of everyone at risk.

German Shepherd was placed in custody this past Thursday, October 1st on Sophie St. in the City of Bessemer.

A male, approx 1yr old.

We'd like him reunited with family. He's currently doing time at HOPE, but may be released on good behavior to his owner(s).

Please contact our office if you are missing him or know where he belongs!

After receiving a tip from an Iron County, Wisconsin, resident, Mr. Geesey was located with the assistance of Gogebic County Sheriff's Office K-9 Deputy Debwe.

The Gogebic County Sheriff's Office would like to thank the following agencies, personnel, and citizens for the help in apprehending Mr. Geesey.

Michigan State Police Wakefield Post, Ironwood Public Safety Department, Hurley Police Department, Iron County, Wisconsin Sheriff's Office, GIANT members and the citizens of Gogebic County, Michigan and Iron County, Wisconsin.

Welcome back and Good Morning, students and staff! School Resource Deputy Graser here, and I have to admit… I was so excited for the first day of school that I could hardly sleep!

I had my first day of school outfit picked out for DAYS! I couldn’t wait for the moment I could finally get up, and go head to school to see everyone.

You may see other Deputies or Officers in and around the schools, be sure to say hi, they will if they see you. We are excited to see our returning students, meet our new students, catch up with staff, and get started on another great year.

Again this year you will see other Deputies and myself in the schools and we are looking forward to teaching some new school safety classes throughout the year, including important topics such as:

*Bus safety — staying seated, following the driver’s directions, and being careful around vehicles at and on the way to the bus stop.

*School arrival and dismissal safety — watching for traffic and using designated areas.

*School emergency procedures — knowing what to do and where to go when an emergency happens.

*Situational awareness — paying attention to what’s happening around you.

*Bullying prevention and reporting — treating others with respect and speaking up when something isn’t right.

*School security — understanding why doors, visitors, and secure areas matter.

*Digital and online safety — making smart choices and knowing when to report something concerning.

*Being a safety leader — looking out for yourself, your classmates and educators.

Remember, school safety is everyone’s responsibility. Students, staff, families, and our community all play an important role in keeping Watersmeet K-12, Wakefield Marenisco School, and Bessemer Area Schools safe… WELCOME BACK! Let’s make this a fantastic school year!
