Since we are currently accepting new banner orders, just a reminder that we will not process "surprise" banners.
Surprising someone with a Hometown Heroes Banner can be a well-intentioned gesture, but it is often not a good idea due to the sometimes strict and sensitive information being provided for the application process. These initiatives are generally intended to honor specific, verified military service, and unexpected public placement can lead to significant personal and community discomfort.
Privacy and Public Exposure: Placing someone’s photograph and name on a public street without their consent can be invasive. The recipient may not want their personal life, face, or service scrutinized by the public in such a prominent way.
Triggering Memories: For veterans, particularly those from the Vietnam era who did not receive a proper welcome home, these banners are meant to be a reverent, long-overdue honor, and having them misused can be emotionally triggering.
Consent and Control: Many programs, particularly those following specific guidelines, consider "surprises" inappropriate. The honoree should have the opportunity to approve the photo used, the spelling of their name, and the details of their service.
In summary, a Hometown Heroes banner is best approached as a collaborative, respectful project with the honoree rather than a surprise.
