ELEVATED RISK OF FIRE SPREAD FRIDAY...

The combination of dry fuels, gusty northwest winds 20 to 30 mph,
and minimum relative humidity values near 40 percent will lead to
an elevated risk of fire spread across southern Connecticut
during the late morning and afternoon hours on Friday.

Use extra caution if handling any potential ignition sources such
as machinery or matches, and ensure to properly extinguish or
dispose of cigarette butts. Any fires that ignite will have the
potential to spread quickly.

This forecast considers meteorological, fuel, and land conditions
and has been developed in coordination with state fire and land
management officials.

📢 September is National Preparedness Month! ⛈️🔌

Power outages can happen without warning due to severe weather or unexpected grid issues. Are you and your family ready if the lights go out?

Take a moment today to review these essential Power Outage Safety Reminders from the American Red Cross:

🔋 BEFORE an Outage:

Build an Emergency Kit: Pack at least a 3-day supply of water (1 gallon per person/day), non-perishable food, flashlights, extra batteries, a first-aid kit, and essential medications.

Plan for Power-Dependent Needs: If you rely on medical equipment, discuss a backup power plan with your doctor or medical provider.

Keep Devices Charged: Maintain a full charge on your phone, backup battery banks, and keep your car’s gas tank at least half-full.

🕯️ DURING an Outage:

Use Flashlights, NOT Candles: Avoid using candles to reduce the risk of home fires.

Unplug Sensitive Electronics: Unplug appliances and TV/computer equipment to protect them from power surges when power is restored.

Keep Fridge & Freezer Doors Closed: An unopened refrigerator keeps food cold for about 4 hours; a full freezer maintains temperature for up to 48 hours.

Never Use Generators Indoors: Keep generators outdoors ONLY, away from windows, doors, and vents to prevent deadly carbon monoxide poisoning.

🧊 AFTER Power is Restored:

When in Doubt, Throw It Out! Discard perishable food (meat, dairy, leftovers) exposed to temperatures over 40°F for 2 hours or more. Never rely on smell or taste alone.

The scenario involved a major blizzard event with prolonged snow removal, downed trees, power outages, damage to schools, and other disastrous scenarios! Officials talked through our response, analyzing our capabilities and documenting areas for improvement.

This is an annual exercise in coordination with the Connecticut Division Emergency Management & Homeland Security. Thank you to our partners at Town of Bethel - CT, Bethel Police Department, Bethel Fire & EMS, Bethel Public Schools, and others for participating in today's exercise.
