Dr. Virginia Adams O'Connell, Associate Professor of Sociology and Department Chair at Moravian University, joins us for a conversation about her book, Remission Quest: A Medical Sociologist Navigates Cancer. New insights can come from examining the cancer experience through sociological frameworks. We will discuss the challenges of the diagnostic process, the transition to being a cancer patient, adjusting to the physical changes and fatigue that result from treatment, important aspects of doctor-patient communication, the impact of the war and survivor metaphors on patients' experiences, and the hopeful return to some semblance of a normal life. New perspectives will help all of us interact with the cancer patients in our lives and may also help anyone who might experience cancer in their lifetime.
